Both team’s strength match up against their opponent’s biggest weakness. Madge showed the template for beating the Bulldogs. One (or 2 if the rushing defence allows)passes wide of the ruck before turning the ball to a runner cutting back at a 45 degree angle. This targets the space around Mahoney. And guess who are perfectly placed to execute this game plan? Hudson Young on the left and Nicholson on the right. Tapine and Strange can do the job as well.

Chad Townsend mentioned in a podcast last years that the Cowboys targeted the space to the left of Steven Crichton and had some success doing that. The following week in the finals Manly scored 2 tries by attacking that area with planned moves. Canberra should get Fogarty to drift across field, dummy to the first inside runner, then pass to Hudson Young or Strange cutting back at an angle.

Then we get to the Bulldogs’ strength which is Kikau and Xerri on the left. This targets the defensive combo of Timoko and Savage which has struggled in recent weeks. It’s a work in progress but Ricky will have to fix it before the finals. I expect it to be raining Burton bombs as Weekes has struggled in this area this year. The Bulldogs will remember a game against Manly a few years back where Weekes dropped a bomb playing fullback for Manly costing his team victory right on full time. He needs to watch how Gutho turns side on and gets his body between the chaser and the ball. Running towards the ball taking a leap without turning your body is high risk. An AFL player or coach needs to help him with his technique.

The Bulldogs have the 2 biggest nigglers in the game in Crichton and Mahoney. And the Raiders have their share of players with short fuses. Ricky will have to make sure his players don’t take the bait. The Bulldogs also have good divers in Crichton and Burton. Crichton especially is very convincing when he chases a bomb and makes a beeline to an opponent before collapsing to the ground. And let’s face it it’s not to hard to fool your average NRL referee, who probably thinks those Nigerian Prince emails asking for money are real.

Prediction: Bulldogs by 2.
MOTM :Kikau
Kikau/Xerri/Chiraz tryscorers
Sin Bin : Cory Horsburgh

Raiders scored 3 tries vs the Titoons with 3 variations of that play- one to Young running the inside line and one to Strange running a hard straight line at the gap created when defenders edged over toward Young running that same line on the next variation, I think the other try went behind the lead runners out the back to Kris or Tamale.

You're right on Weekes, he had been a bit shaky under the high ones but did a great job vs Hughes and Munster in the wet and mud last week. Should give him some confidence.

Exciting match up, 2 good teams playing well. Neither quite actually got their game 100% locked down yet either, as you point out.

The Raiders will also need to overcome their slow starts, especially when the stakes are higher later in the year. The other good variation of above mentioned move is Fogarty dribbling in a short grubber for Hudson Young to score. In fact pencil in Hudson Young to score . Nicholson also as he has a very effective hit and spin. The Raiders bench is good too, especially Zac Hosking . Hopefully he can have an injury free run.

The Bulldogs are good at grappling with the ball runner while moving said runner sideways , forwards or backwards to delay the call of “release”. This gives them extra time to set their defensive line and won’t show up in the ptb speeds (which are calculated from the time “release” is called by the referee to the time the ball is on the ground being played. )They also like to drag the ball carrier closer to the line when defending less than 10m out from their line as it’s a lot easier to defend when the ptb is inside that area . This is good coaching from Ciraldo.

Interesting to hear that Daryl Halligan rates Crichton the best goalkicker of the current kickers in the NRL that he has worked with . And that includes Cleary. Apparently he’s keeping the goal kicking duties even though Burton returns. I’d back Cleary though to nail a sideline conversion to win the match every day of the week.

is this a sellout ? - will be a shame if it isnt - could be game of the season if both teams bring their best

Yeh officially all seats sold yesterday!

They're trying to organise standing room maybe adding an extra thousand or so but it's not confirmed! For now no tickets are available.

They released some standing room tickets today, but they’re gone now too.
