Not bad. I'm disappointed with Fletcher though. He has not shown anything with ball in hand this year. He hasn't run good lines, got into space or looked remotely threatening. Also goes into tackles too upright. Cookie folded him in half in the Charity Shield. Not a good look copping that from a little bloke. But maybe he can do a job and make the necessary adjustments.

Dodd had ice on his calf after coming off before the end of the Cup game and doesn't cover as many positions as Sullivan can. He's just a straight halfback I think and not particularly quick.

Id rather see wighton at lock, at centre he tends to miss tackles id leave tass in the 4 and leave bently hape on the wing ,he had a great game sat
Jack can defend well out wide when he's switched on and the side pushes out from the inside well. But he can also miss tackles too. He missed Suli 1-on-1 in the CS but he wouldn't be the first to do that and won't be the last.

We need to cover both edges better than we did against Saints because the Sharks are even better at stripping numbers and running their wingers over for tries. I personally feel a tad more confident with a Wighton-Tass combo than a Tass-Bentley-Hape one. Will be up against it either way .;)

Bit surprised to see they've named Tallis considering they said he had done a hammy. Obviously not as bad as first thought but he could still be a late omission if he doesn't pull up well by game day.

Not surprised to see Rava named on the extended bench but he could be a late inclusion for Myers I suspect.

Expected Liam in for Hubby.

One is a diminutive fullback with fancy footwork and speed to burn. The other is a hulking front rower who steamrolls opposition defenders for fun.

Together they are the NRL’s leaders in post-contact metres and their games couldn’t be more different.

On Saturday Jye Gray and Addin Fonua-Blake will go head-to-head in a unique clash of styles when the Rabbitohs take on Cronulla at Sharks Stadium.

Gray tops the leaderboard for both running metres and post-contact metres, with 592m and 190m respectively.

Fonua-Blake sits second with 154 post-contact metres and his 331 running metres are the equal third highest by a forward.

"For a big boy to be able to move like that is scary, I wouldn't want to be the one defending him so it's cool to have him at the club."

At the opposite end of the physical scale is Rabbitohs fullback Jye Gray, a 78kg, 170cm featherweight.
Gray doubles down

While many fear he is too small for the NRL, the 21-year-old's performances through the opening two rounds have gone a long way to silencing those critics.

He may be one of the smallest players in the competition, but those who have played against him quickly learn not to take him lightly.

After making his NRL debut last year, the youngster was thrust into the Rabbitohs No.1 jumper on the eve of the season when Latrell Mitchell injured his hamstring at training.

While Gray's attacking stats jump off the page, South Sydney skipper Cody Walker said his defensive impact is just as important.

"We all saw what he was capable of last year," Walker said. "One of the things I love about Jye is he wants the footy. He's always in my ear about just getting him the footy and it's a great indication for young kids that they're ready to go. As an old five-eighth, you've just got to give them the ball and he just does what he does.

"The thing that gets underestimated with Jye is his defence and his ability to stop tries. [Christian] Tuipulotu made a clean break [last weekend] and he just grabbed him around the ankles. Being that tiny, him just getting his body there to stop some tries gets underestimated a little bit.

"He's going unreal and he's shown that since he's been at the club that he's just a tough little lad who gets in there and has a crack."

Gray boasts the unique mix of speed, footwork and ruggedness that allows him to break a game open in an instant.

Gritty Gray racks up the stats

It’s a skillset that has the Sharks on high alert as they prepare to host the Rabbitohs on Sunday.

Gray ran for 151m, made three linebreaks, 12 tackles busts and scored a try when the two teams faced off in Round 22 last season. Cronulla won the match but the players have not forgotten how difficult the youngster was to handle.

While they’re determined to avoid focusing too much on one player, Iro said the Sharks must hunt as a pack to contain the Rabbitohs fullback.

"We just need more bodies around him," Iro said. "We can't really go at him one out because he just skittles out or bounces off you.

"He's just a little nugget and is so powerful, he always beats the first defender. We need numbers around him, that's the best way to shut him down."

Sharks v Rabbitohs: Back on home turf; Wighton returns

NRL.com Tue 18 Mar 2025, 04:05 PM

The unbeaten Rabbitohs will be out to claim a big scalp when they travel to Sharks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With master coach Wayne Bennett back at the helm the Bunnies have defied the absence of Latrell Mitchell and Cameron Murray to register back-to-back wins over the Dolphins and Dragons but a sterner test awaits in the Shire.

The Sharks are riding a three-game winning streak against the Rabbitohs and come into this one full of confidence after a seven-try romp in Townsville, with their back five combining for 886 run metres and 26 tackle breaks.

With Jack Wighton due back from suspension and new signing Mikaele Ravalawa available for selection, the Rabbitohs' backline is set to take on a different look as they match motors with Will Kennedy, Jesse Ramien, Ronaldo Mulitalo and Kayal Iro.

The last time the Rabbitohs started a season 3-0 was Bennett's first year at the club in 2019, going on to win 10 of their first 11 matches and progressing all the way to a preliminary final.

Team News

Sharks: Stability has been a cornerstone of Cronulla's success in recent seasons and coach Craig Fiztgibbon sticks with the same 17 that took care of business in Townsville. Prop Tuku Hau Tapuha has retained his place on the bench with fellow front-rower Tom Hazelton still troubled by back soreness. Brothers Hohepa and Niwhai Puru are part of the extended squad along with Mawene Hiroti while Billy Burns is 18th man.
Rabbitohs: Jack Wighton is back from suspension in the centres so Fletcher Myers pushes out to the wing and last week's debutant Bayleigh Bentley-Hape drops out. New recruit Mikaele Ravalawa is listed as 18th man. Back-rower Tallis Duncan has need named to start at lock despite fears he had suffered a hamstring injury against the Dragons. Duncan takes over from Lachlan Hubner, who is serving a two-game ban for a crusher tackle. Liam Le Blanc has been added to the bench.

Stat Attack

  • Sharks winger Sam Stonestreet has scored eight tries in his past five games.
  • The Rabbitohs have won only one of their past six games at Sharks Stadium.
  • Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo has scored 37 tries in 33 games at Sharks Stadium.
  • The Rabbitohs are aiming for a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since 2019.
  • Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes has landed 26 of his past 27 attempts at goal at Sharks Stadium.

Not so sure Rava will play in this game. He's too short of a gallop. He only played about half a game in the Dragons first trial against the Roosters a month ago and not played since.

Wayne will probably want him to get some match fitness and timing going in the NSW Cup as well as more time training with the main squad before considering him for 1st grade maybe the week after. But I could be wrong about that.

Betr has us at $5.20 to win in this one. Lol.

That's probably about right unfortunately. Can't tip Souths this week if I'm going with my head but still, a Wayne Bennet coached team is always a chance.

If we can defend our edges much better than we did last week we can turn this into a bit of a dog fight by keeping it close and maybe we're a chance.

That's ironic because in the past, that's what the Sharks always used to do. Turn it into trench warfare. But under Fitzy, they've turned into a much prettier side and don't look to win ugly any more. Hope they've forgotten how to win ugly if we can turn it into an "ugly" type of match.

Sharks v Rabbitohs, Saturday 3.00pm (AEDT) at Sharks Stadium

Sharks: Tom Hazelton will miss a second-straight week due to back soreness, with Tuku Hau Tapuha to remain on the bench as his replacement. Coach Craig Fitzgibbon expects the same squad that beat the Cowboys to line up for the side's first game at Sharks Stadium for the year.

Rabbitohs: A cloud hovers over Tallis Duncan, who was named at lock despite picking up a hamstring injury last weekend. The forward will likely have until Friday's captain's run to prove his fitness. New recruit Mikaele Ravalawa is in the mix to play his first match for the club after being named 18th man for Saturday's clash. The winger only joined South Sydney on Sunday after being granted a short-term release by the Dragons. Jack Wighton is set to return from suspension, with Fletcher Myers shifting back to the wing and Bayleigh Bentley-Hape dropping out.
