The Ashes still to come at the end of the year, and next year the World Cup We have so many events while the AFL have nothing, it's quiet sad for that code, not that I give a sh1t anyway.
Well you always write about them every post so you obviously do

Yep the Ashes is gonna be huge. Looking forward to seeing images of a packed Wembley and Everton stadium with a proper international test series… while the afl chat about how they can concoct some sort of hybrid afl/ Irish game to boost the Aflw somehow 😂

Nrl ratings growing strongly across fta and pay tv
Just wanted to make a note about the different metrics released for both the NRL and AFL. The first impression from the data is that the AFL is growing by 25% and the NRL 12.5% on Fox. But when you look a little bit deeper (mind you, using extrapolated data from last year). Paints it a bit closer. Interesting which sets of data that Fox seemingly decided to release.

NRL 2024

"Martin Medcraf, Foxtel Media sport sales and partnerships director to Mediaweek: “NRL rounds 1-25 followed suit with an average audience of 483,000, +18% from last season”.

"Kayo Sports viewership surged 30% year on year. There were five billion minutes streamed across all Foxtel Group streaming platforms which was up 30% compared to 2023. A huge 59% of the total Foxtel Group audience streamed the coverage."

-----------------------------------------------------
AFL 2024

"Fox Group did release some data two weeks before finals that showed an AFL match average across set top box and streaming of 397,000 per game.
https://footyindustry.com/index.php/2025/01/23/2024-afl-aflw-tv-ratings/
Martin Medcraf, Foxtel Media sport sales and partnerships director to Mediaweek: “ The AFL 2024 season has seen an increase of 33% on 2023, with an average audience of 397,000. Last Sunday’s Fremantle vs Port Adelaide game led the season with an average audience of 710,000 across Kantar STB and streaming VPM, closely followed by the Carlton vs St Kilda game at 685,000.”
----------------------------------------------------
If you set the AFL's Kayo increase in 2025 of 25% as the beanchmark figure. And extrapolate the NRL ratios of growth last year to get an equivalent comparison figure (not Fox group overall). You get a Kayo increase of 20.8% for the NRL.

So around 25% vs 20.8% Kayo increase.

----------------------------------------------------
If like I suspect Kayo streaming has continued to increase and traditional Foxtel boxes have stalled or even lost subscribers. Last year we saw an increase of Kayo subsribers of 14% (to 1.606 million - increase of approximately 200k) and total Foxtel Group subsribers up by 1% (4.776 million - increase of approximately 48k). Meaning that Traditional Foxtel Boxes likely lost between 3-5% of subscribers, as this is only the increase in Kayo subsribers, any other increases in any other Fox Group offerings means the percentage loss of Foxtel Box subsribers would be higher.

That bodes even better for the NRL's possible Kayo figure.

To simplify, lets say both AFL and NRL have 100 subscribers. 60 from Kayo and 40 from traditional Foxtel.

Let's say traditional Foxtel boxes have lost 5% subscribers for both codes. Down to 38 for both.

Kayo up by 25% for the AFL = 75 Kayo + 38 Foxtel = 113 total

Total Fox Group up by 12.5% for NRL = 74.5 Kayo + 38 Foxtel = 112.5 total
------------------------------------------------------
Feel free to critically anyalyse these figures, but just thought I'd share some back of the napkin maths as to why the two metrics released aren't comparable at all.

Either way, with the change in Tv rights for the AFL on Saturdays it would be expected that they would increase viewership on Fox. I'd even argue, that you would expect it to be greater based on the NRL's viewership growth with no change in broadcasting arrangements.

Yep. I can do maths as well which clearly you can’t.
Well, when they were trying to verify you they asked you 4 simple questions, what was the last sharks attendance? Tick 1 box

11k
13k
16k
21k tick

And you ticked 21k, I dont know where the other 10k popped out from, prob your back.side, so you failed miserably, and you talk about me with bad maths 🤣 next time pick 30k then you'll get verified quicker 😆

Is there any official ratings system in PNG?

And what would counting them with Australian TV ratings mean?

They certainly aren't going to generate any revenue for Australian TV stations.

Perth will.

And in 5 years when they build themselves a premiership winning team do you not think that people in OZ, (and NZ and England) won`t be tuning in in large numbers to watch them play, just like they tune in now to watch any serious premiership contender.

The women’s NSW and Queensland State of Origin teams are now more popular than the Matildas.

Free-to-air TV ratings last week are the proof.

The women’s Origin game on Thursday night attracted 1.165 million viewers nationally on Channel 9 free-to-air and streaming.

On Friday night the Matildas v Argentina in Melbourne on Channel 10 got only 404,000.

These figures are not just a one-off.

All three State of Origin games have rated one million-plus while Matildas games over the past 12 months against Argentina, Chinese Taipei, Korea and Uzbekistan have averaged just under 500,000.

So what can we put this all this down to?

No Mary Fowler and no Sam Kerr would affect the Matildas numbers.

The bad publicity around Kerr’s poor behaviour in the UK would also have been a turn off.

Obviously, the Matildas numbers are far bigger at a World Cup.

But there’s no stopping the incredible growth of women’s rugby league in recent times.

“The level of skill in the women’s game has evolved so quickly,” said independent commission chairman Peter V’landys.

“I’ve never seen growth in any sport like the NRLW. We gave them the opportunity and they’ve delivered with extraordinary skill. It’s really exciting. I’m not surprised that their TV ratings have been so good.”

Imagine how big the NRLW will be in 10 years.

There are now 30,000 women playing rugby league in NSW alone. They make up 27 per cent of total registrations.

Young girls who have previously grown up to play netball or soccer have been inspired by what they have witnessed during the three State of Origin games.

They want to be the next Jessica Sergis, Isabelle Kelly, Jesse Southwell, Kezie Apps, Olivia Kernick, Kennedy Cherrington, Tiana Penitani Gray or Jaime Chapman.

HIGHLIGHT

Manly Sea Eagles fullback/winger Lehi Hopoate is a future superstar. And I love how he spoke so generously and respectfully after the win over the Broncos of the guidance and influence that Tom Trbojevic has had on his development as one of the game’s most exciting players.

LOWLIGHT

The proof that the Broncos have gone backwards is that this time last year after 13 rounds under Kevvie Walters they were running fifth on 16 points.

SHOOSH

Strong rumours over the weekend that former Parramatta Eels coach Brad Arthur, who has missed out on the Perth Bears job, is already being shopped to the Gold Coast Titans by his manager. It must be a difficult one for his agent Chris Orr. He also manages Jason Demetriou, Josh Hannay, Justin Holbrook and John Morris who would also be keen on the job.

SHOOSH

The Roosters were chucked off the Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their captain’s run because of the poor playing surface. The plan to play NSW Cup before the Roosters v Raiders NRL game also had to be abandoned – and that’s where the members and fans are now being ripped off. How can Allianz Stadium possibly cope with another NRL team? There is absolutely no way the stadium can also cater for the South Sydney Rabbitohs unless something is done to fix the embarrassing drainage issues.

SPOTTED

Rugby union convert Joey Manu back at the Sydney Roosters headquarters last week, not that he’s planning an NRL comeback. The Roosters have allowed Manu to use the club gym for two weeks before he heads to France for the rugby season.

SPOTTED

Independent commission chairman Peter V’landys walking out of Gladesville Bunnings on Saturday with a Ryobi hedge trimmer. And we thought he had his own gardener.

SPOTTED

The extraordinary growth of rugby league in New Zealand is there for all to see on the back of the success of the Warriors. Rotorua over the weekend hosted a Maori tournament – the equivalent of our Koori Knockout. This event started with a handful of teams 20 years ago. On Saturday there were 50 teams competing. Almost every NRL club recruitment manager was there to check out the talent.

RIGHT MOVE

Newcastle coach Adam O’Brien learnt his lesson last year about stars backing up from Origin, hence the decision to rest Kalyn Ponga with an ankle injury on Friday night against the Dragons. Last year a fatigued Bradman Best insisted on backing after Origin. He did his hamstring and was out for six weeks. The Knights play Manly on Thursday night in Newcastle. They have to win. It would have been madness to ask their superstar fullback to play three games in eight days considering the extent of an injury he has been carrying for a month.

Catch you Monday on NRL 360 at 6.30pm on Fox League with Braith Anasta, Gorden Tallis and Brent Read to discuss all the major issues from the weekend round of footy.

Thats not my arguement, to be clear any RATINGS IN PNG, will not help an Australian TV deal.

Ratings in Australia are what matters for an Australian TV deal.
