Women’s origin climbing the ranks is new

As is the big fall off In afl fta numbers

Just to highlight for people on here :

Nrl with two markets is beating afl with five markets for many games

And even worse not just five afl markets but two games combined together to maximise those aggregate numbers in each individual market

This is unprecedented in sports history here

Deflect all you want it’s true

Afl on fta used to be untouchable now it’s a disaster

Yeah, league is booming

I know lions series is something special but wallabies should be playing over ten home tests every year (like I think they use to).

The third British & Irish Lions v Wallabies tour match had a consolidated audience of 781,000 (up from 689,000 o/n).

The series had aggregate ratings of 2.467 million at an average of 822,000 per match on Nine.

Is that your left head saying that or the right one? Could you clarify? It's a bit confusing who I'm talking too
I will as soon as you can pass a basic mathematics test. If you don’t want to look like an idiot don’t post like one.

They do when you include northern hemisphere tours

The amount of games they play keeps increasing to make more money for them

Tbf the afl were always going to lose FTA viewers with increased STV uptake, just as the NRL did. Lopsided scores have hurt their fta ratings the most imo, and it’s harder to fix, particularly for such a long game that’s essentially over after a quarter. The talent obviously isn’t there and increasingly all they have is private white schoolboys. Only going to get worse as they add Tasmania.

Tassie will add nothing to crowds, nothing to ratings, and they’ve already got the athletes (if that’s what you call them). And that’s why the afl doesn’t want us.

Been saying it for a while. The AFL has peaked. Where is there any possible growth left? They have plonked teams everywhere, even unwanted ones, they already get the best stadiums everywhere. No one outside of Australia is interested. They have lead the way for decades and everything pretty much has gone their way, but the problem is they are now done and RL is coming for them.

AFL is cooked. They’ve hit their ceiling.

NSW and QLD ‘expansion’ is as good as it will get for them. Despite billions spent.

Their new expansion areas aren’t going to grow their game in any meaningful way. If they put a team in Tasmania, it’s already an afl state and a tiny one at that. They’ll get 15k crowds at best and tv viewership won’t grow. If they put a team in Canberra, they’ll just erode whatever support GWS has from expat Victorians.

They will only have more teams they need to put on life support and throw billions at it to continue an illusion of a ‘national’ sport.

No international growth. No innovation (just copying nrl). No meaningful success on growth areas. The nrl is already on par or beating afl in key metrics like viewership and just getting started.

Nrl don’t need to take over afl states they just need to find a market, which is happening in Victoria.

The problem is they’ve had saturation coverage in nsw and qld for 20 years

Adding second teams to make up for a lack of growth was stupid but that’s their blind arrogance

You can’t be a credible top tier sport and have basically nobody watching in a majority of the country

You might not like AFL, but to not call it a credible top tier sport just because NRL ratings are higher is laughable. Average AFL crowds are approximately double NRL, AFL tv rights higher, AFL governing body has a bigger balance sheet. It's like saying Woolworths generates more revenue than Coles so the latter is not a credible competitor.

The AFL season has become a real blowout TBF, with a clear division between the top 8 or 9 and the rest. For instance in betting, its usual in the footy codes to have a game fave paying for example $1.50 and the underdog paying $3 to $4. two weeks ago and last week, there were at least 7 games in AFL that the underdog was paying more than $10. I’ve never seen that. Everyone know it, and no doubt it’s affecting ratings. However, the AFL normally beats us during finals time. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s even more the case this year, as a lot of their fans will start to tune in now that the games are perceived to be closer.

The AFL has had a shit year no doubt …and you can see their TV ratings are declining … but it’s year 1 of a way overpriced broadcast deal which lasts for 7 years …so is it really going to hurt them in the short term ? As per usual… their timing is impeccable
