Further reading - Fastbreak AI announced this in July

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 16th, 2025) – Fastbreak AI, the company transforming sports operations with artificial intelligence, today announced a multi-year partnership with the National Rugby League (NRL), the premier professional rugby league competition in the world. The NRL will leverage Fastbreak’s industry-leading scheduling software platform, Fastbreak Pro Schedule, to manage its global fixture demands, optimize operational efficiency, and improve competitive balance across the league.

With matches played across multiple continents and time zones, the NRL faces one of the most complex scheduling challenges in sports. The league turned to Fastbreak AI to help streamline long-haul travel, align international broadcast windows, optimize venue availability, minimize player fatigue and improve fairness throughout the season to deliver a smarter, more balanced season structure.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said, “The NRL schedule is extremely complex and the Fastbreak platform will provide greater capability to balance the competing demands of major event planning, stadium conflicts, and team travel logistics.

“As we continue to expand domestically across Australia, and internationally in North America and throughout the South Pacific, our Fastbreak partnership will allow us to optimise the season schedule for the benefit of fans, players, and broadcasters.”

Fastbreak Pro Schedule automatically balances hundreds of rules and constraints, including team preferences, blackout windows, rest periods, venue availability and broadcast requirements when building a schedule. Once a schedule is generated, league officials can make manual adjustments using a drag-and-drop interface, with the platform providing real-time feedback to highlight the impact of each change and help resolve potential conflicts.

“Scheduling has become one of the most strategic levers a league has, impacting nearly every aspect of the organization,” Fastbreak AI CEO John Stewart said. “It’s empowering to know that the National Rugby League has trusted us to help tackle and optimize something this complex. We’re looking forward to working alongside the NRL for years to come and making a meaningful impact on the league, its teams, players and fans.”

Founded by experts in mathematical optimization, machine learning and AI, Fastbreak’s technology now powers more than 50 of the world’s top professional sports league schedules – including the NBA, NHL, NWSL and MLS. The company is backed by professional leagues including the NBA, NHL and TMRW Sports, as well as former NFL and NBA stars Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Olsen and Gordon Hayward.

Just schedule NSW Cup and U21 at the same venue as the NRL clubs

Newtown align with Cronulla

Bears align with a Qld club for 2026

Anyway 18 teams allows for a 25 round schedule with two pools of 9 with pools playing each other home & away and cross pool games home and away over 2 years

It would destroy a club like Newtown forcing them to play at Shark Park. The club's sponsors & a large portion of their supporters are based around Henson Park, moving away (which the team has trialed in the past) would not work.

As for the Queensland teams, all four of them are set to have reserve teams in the QCup next year, so you can't just pair the Bears with one of them.

The reported QCup expansion isn't til 2027 at this stage.

Jets can choose to play at home if they want. Just needs to be on the same weekend Cronulla

You realise that Qld Cup is a different competition to NSW Cup(defact NRL RG)

In 2027 North Sydney would just align to Perth Bears side of the draw

Plenty of room to include the missing 4 Qld clubs

The 7 day turn around didn’t hurt the Broncos, more ammo for Sunday arvo footy

I love daytime footy.

Prayers answered a little while back when the NRL started letting Penrith have more Sunday afternoon matches. Its great in the colder months.

I'd love to see more of it in 2026. A day time grand final would be a huge hit I'm sure.

Very much looking forward to this AI still managing to draw us to play the Roosters, Panthers, Storm, Broncos and Bulldogs twice next year.

And each of them only 2 or 3 weeks apart, whilst getting the Titans once, during SOO.

The only thing I hope with the draw for next season is that there’s at least 7-8 weeks in between repeat fixtures. So many fixtures this season were played twice within about 6 weeks. As a wise man once said - come on that’s ridiculous!

Hopefully this will be minimised in future but I don’t think it will be able to be completely eradicated.
