2026 rule changes confirmed

Rules now confirmed, just days before the first official trial. Quite a farcical, amaturish, embarrasing situation, but I digress. Here they are.

Thankfully the dumb kickoff change isn't happening, but there's one big change that bears some examination. The set restart threshold goes back to the 20m, rather than the current 40. I think this is a bad move from a rugby league perspective, takes us back to the horrid days of 2021 when the set restart rule first began. We had lightning fast games, and frequent blowouts where teams with momentum scored at will. Alex Johnston scored 30 tries, Rueben Garrick had 334 points, the second highest single season haul in history, and Tom Trbojevic was untouchable. Records tumbled at such a rate that the entire season is a virtual statistical outlier : https://www.rugbyleagueeyetest.com/...tatistics-from-a-very-normal-nrl-2021-season/

The big question is, will this help or hurt the Dragons?
At first glance, it might help. We do have a mostly young, lighter, mobile forward pack, a couple of speedsters at dummy half and a quick halfback. Certainly we're in better shape than we were in 2021 - when our pack was much bigger and slower, with McCullough at dummy half (vomit).
I just wonder if we have the backline to capitalise on it though, or if such a high octane style of play suits the tough, gritty style that is the trademark of Shane Flanagan teams

Absolutely no one was calling for more 6-agains other than V'Landys' inflated ego wanting to leave his mark on the game.

It is such a bad rule and there needed to be less of them, not more. All this does is leave games more open to (at best) 'unconscious bias' to sway the result a certain way, or to even up a contest. At worst, it leaves the games more open to corruption as the gambling audience grows and the bookies have more at stake on games. All under the guise of 'unpredictability', it is actually just making results more volatile, which panders to gambling agencies.

I like this new rule.

Interchange rules – Teams may interchange four players, up to eight times per match, from a squad of six players (players 14 to 19 inclusive).

You can put a half and back on the bench now as well as 4 forwards and if a half or back goes down early in the game you can burn an interchange for a player that plays a similar position and not put a forward in the centres or half.

now the question is do you sit Reed/LKT on the bench in case of an injury at the risk of stifling their progress through Reggies.

Although from an NRL perspective the 6 man bench will make for more things to talk about pre-game.. and help in situations where a game is ruined because a back is lost early.. such as when Suli got knocked out in the opening tackle v roosters.. we couldn't overcome that... it will help there.. but your still gonna end up with a 3-man bench though.. and 1 sub used.

But.. I was hoping they wouldnt change it.. cause im more interested in player development... and last year the 18th man would already miss all football week after week.. we would sometimes hide an old player there that didnt need development.. but its not good at all for the young ones. Now its 2 or maybe 3 players potentially missing football (not sure if the HIA sub is still there). They'll rotate em a bit but certain players are just a rly good fit for the extended bench.. now hopefully common sense means they will play reserve grade where possible.. but a lot of weeks thats not possible due to travel and/or timing of the matches... and also it is a big ask if they just did 80mins of ressies.

The other thing it does is put in jeaopardy the role of the classic 14.. Cook for example who is currently in negotiation.. I mean we will still need a bench hooker.. so nothing has really changed I spose.. but Cook is fast enough to cover a range of backline positions, but he probably wont be needed there too often.. but.. then again I mean if you do throw an outside back in off ur bench, ur now a forward down in your rotation.. so its not always a straight forward answer.. depends when it happens in the game..

Cook could be one of those co tracts specific to the extended bench. Quality player who you can bring on if we get an injury, and longevity will benefit from less minutes

who else Could be ideal for such?

Imo expansion to 6 man bench comes at a good time for us. It probably means playing injury prone guys like CT & Sele is less riskier as we can have specific cover for em. Guys like Feagai would be ideal for that bench spot, tbh he can cover a few backline positions but his development isn't really our concern. Ditto for a half like O'Neil or even rotating guys like LKT & Reed for some games. If the speed of play is increasing then having a 2nd dummy half is a must as part of the interchange rotation.

I think we could also use someone like Sloan on the bench if we're chasing points or wanting to add more speed. I think some teams will use it for tactical purpose, rather than just for injury cover.

I hate the amendment to the 6 again rule. We'll definitely get screwed over by it unless we suddenly become one of the darlings.
The 6 man bench is understandable given the amount of injuries and HIA's. I would have left it that you can interchange all of them as well instead of only 4.

That makes much more sense to be able to interchange all 6 rather than just 4. At least interchange 5 if there is an early injury to a back or half. With HIA playing a role in having guys come off and not returning it just makes more sense from a player welfare perspective to interchange 5 or 6 players.
