ARLC confirms 2026 on-field rule changes following extensive consultation
The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has today confirmed a package of on-field rule changes for the 2026 season, following an extensive consultation process with clubs, players, coaches and key stakeholders.
Rules now confirmed, just days before the first official trial. Quite a farcical, amaturish, embarrasing situation, but I digress. Here they are.
Thankfully the dumb kickoff change isn't happening, but there's one big change that bears some examination. The set restart threshold goes back to the 20m, rather than the current 40. I think this is a bad move from a rugby league perspective, takes us back to the horrid days of 2021 when the set restart rule first began. We had lightning fast games, and frequent blowouts where teams with momentum scored at will. Alex Johnston scored 30 tries, Rueben Garrick had 334 points, the second highest single season haul in history, and Tom Trbojevic was untouchable. Records tumbled at such a rate that the entire season is a virtual statistical outlier : https://www.rugbyleagueeyetest.com/...tatistics-from-a-very-normal-nrl-2021-season/
The big question is, will this help or hurt the Dragons?
At first glance, it might help. We do have a mostly young, lighter, mobile forward pack, a couple of speedsters at dummy half and a quick halfback. Certainly we're in better shape than we were in 2021 - when our pack was much bigger and slower, with McCullough at dummy half (vomit).
I just wonder if we have the backline to capitalise on it though, or if such a high octane style of play suits the tough, gritty style that is the trademark of Shane Flanagan teams
