24000 Crowd, Well Done Melbourne

And?

Aren't we forever hearing about how Melbourne is the sporting capital of Aus? Or that it will 'rally behind the storm'

Yeah 24k is absolute shyte after 12 years and millions of dollars invested. Its actually pathetic and an embarrassment to this proud game. If a Syd/Bris team got done for what the storm did and sent out the call to arms, you would see 60k +, espescially on ANZAC day... Actually, we've seen hundreds of thousands marching for Souths, so do us all a favour and f*ck off.

And any other club supporter actually applauding anything to do with Melbourne should be bloody ashamed. Feel sorry for their fans? Just look at the sh*t threads started by them tonight

Still bitter after 1999? That one still stands in the record books, pity Mundine couldn't lead your group of Dragon-Steeler failures to victory.

So 113,979 people watched football in Melbourne yesterday and over 20% of them chose Rugby League over or in addition to AFL? In any other week I'd call that a massive result for our game.

Leigh.

To be fair, the MCG was actually sold out yesterday so people couldn't walk up and buy a ticket to the AFL. However, despite everyone on this site framing it as a NRL v AFL contest, a large amount of Collingwood and Essendon supporters, myself included, went straight from the MCG to Etihad to support the Storm. A lot of fans in Victoria support both codes, and I don't see a problem with that.

Well done to the Storm supporters who have stuck by their club. The atmosphere was absolutely phenomenal.

This decision may have saved rugby league in melbourne not the doom and gloom people thought it would.

If the supporters do continue for a while , then whether it was intentional or not Gallop turn out to be genius sticking to his decision .

What excuse do you want? "oh RL should be stronger than it is!" or "oh the next TV deal will fix everything"... or maybe we should reduce the number of Sydney teams, starting with Parra.

Look as much as you guys dont like to admit it, league is still a fledgling sport, supported by few. But fans expect the world, brainwashed by commentators and cant think for themselves. Its easy to imagine a great comp with teams all over the country, massive player payments and angelic players, but that's not the reality.

The reality is 24k in Melbourne after 12 years is absolute shyte. Even with all their success* they still cant crack the 30k mark on ANZAC day. Sure, its an AFL town, and that is not going to change, even more so now. They are a drain on the rest of the comp plain and simple.

To think a thread would be created for this figure just shows how little progress has been made in Victoria. And the very premise of the thread has to be a joke.. 'stay loyal'. Well i look forward to be proven wrong in 19 weeks time. Lets see how many 'stay loyal' through this season and beyond

Yeah but at the same time St George Illawarra are two clubs.
How about we call it even?
Dragons have to compete with rest of Sydney teams for crowds.
Melbourne are a one team town but the majority dont care or know who they are.

Just thought id put it in perspective to those who think Melbourne actually gives a sh*t about the storm, or RL in general.

That on top of the fact that every game is effectively an away game so we don't get our average boosted like everyone else.

How many teams besides the storm can get 20K+ (as high as 28K) against an out of town team?

How many rl clubs in sydney pull 24000 When another game on the same day pulls 90000?

Actually those crowd averages look good.

With the Storm out of the way, that bodes well for an all-Sydney GF this year so we should see some bumper Sydney crowds this year.

If the Dragons, Dogs, Eels, Tigers and Souths are all near the top of the ladder, the numbers will be high.

I actually think that something you say may actually have merit.

Im hoping that this adversity will bring the Melbourne fans together and harden them up, making them more commited.

Hoping.

More committed? Considering the crowds the storm have pulled in the past they have an incredible number of season ticket holders. The storm fans are very dedicated the trouble has always been branching outside of the strong core group.

Apparently they've attained 300 more memberships since the scandal broke. Well done Storm fans!
