2nd tier cap

Surely each team should be able to select the best 17 players (in its coach's view) that it has available.

Maybe it should be like NFL where you can delist a player if they have a serious injury. If a player is out for the season he can be delisted, taken off the cap and unavailable for rest of the year allowing a new player to be brought in to replace him?

I wonder if Penrith have any 1st Tier cap space left. If so as a workaround until they get a proper solution to the problem, maybe an allowance could be made (which would apply to all clubs), that some of the 1st Tier cap could be transferred across to the 2nd Tier cap. This would then allow the club to keep playing those guys, while not going over the total salary cap.

Wat a joke. That side was reported being worth 2.8 mil yet we have to drop a kid due to salary cap.

The nrl still seems like the same bungling organisation it was under gallop, just with a sitload more money.

That sucks,we are in the same boat,we can't bring any more players up,as it is 12 of our top 25 are injured, and 9 under 20's plus 5 NSW cup players, that is why we are last.
Penrith are lucky they are playing us this week.

You lost Galloway same game same injury as we lost Coote. We lost Latimore round 1 possible season.

No reason all 3 couldn't be replaced with 2nd tier players on minimum wage. Same with Beale at Dragons.

The crazy thing is our team is about $500k under the 1st tier cap yet can't play our best available 17.

If I was panthers I'd just cop the fine, isn't there clubs each year that get fined for going over the cap due to these similar reasons? As long as they don't lose points I'd be playing the best 17 available if I were Penrith

we could lose both points and get fined

Yep. Penrith stuck between a rock and a hard place. Your in a position that you could make the finals, but to make the finals you need those guys playing, but if you play those guys, then you may not get the points cause you blatantly went over the cap.

correction you use the words blatantly. What do you suggest the club do to replace the injured players play with 10 players.Simple fact there are several out for the year and need to be replaced this can only come from players outside the top 25.There lies our problem under the current cap given each player get a minumin 85k after 5 players you are over

The raiders used to get fined all the time for breaching the second tier cap because we always seem to get a ridiculous amount of injuries.

It's just bad luck.

No issue with the injuries part of footy. It's the lack of flexibity when they occur that's the problem.

It does happen to clubs semi regularly. In fact most years it happens to Penrith I think given we always rack up 8-10 injuries at once at some stage of the season. The rule is made to look obserd because injuries have helped us and the replacement players are lighting up the game. Normally you cant get the replacement out of their quick enough.

It would be good to see the Panthers field the team they want and then challenge any penalty that results.

Would be good to see the salary cap challenged and beaten and removed.

I use the word blatantly because you have been notified that you would exceed the cap by playing them. So if you did play them, then it would be a blatant attempt to exceed the cap. It's not like you don't have players who could play, it's just there not as good.

That doesn't mean I think it's right, it's just the situation you find yourselves in.

One of the agendas the commision should be making a priority - the "reserve" grade comp and its salary cap. Briefly increase the NRL squad to 30 and its cap. Bring in the national reserve grade comp aligning current NRL clubs with NSW/QLD Cup teams and increase its cap. Clubs can have soley QLD or NSW Cup feeder club relationship or both.

It was preposterous that a bright young talent like Moylan was not allowed to play today because of a second tier cap, despite the panthers injury toll. Even though we were the benefactors of the decision it was wrong. The rule was obviously brought in for a reason but keeping promising fringe talent out of first grade was not the reason.
