I was listening to Talkin Sport this afternoon and several callers rang up to enquire about 2SM's possible plans to call the football next year. What I found disturbing was Graeme Hughes's response which was along the lines of - it's up to the NRL. The station and it's many networks which stretch up to Queensland are very keen to call the games, but the NRL will have the final say. He didn't sound too confident when he suggested it was in the NRL's hands.
I think it would be a disgrace if the NRL yet again robbed it's fans of another alternative to listen to the footy. The ABC is not totally committed to rugby league and 2GB panders to a wider variety audience and excludes many hardcore fans who are not interested in its vaudeville/comedy style. Hughes as head caller and Jimmy Smith as sideline eye would be an excellent mix for the 2SM team with many others they could add to make it perfect.
In Melbourne many stations call the AFL, giving the game maximum exposure. We should do the same. It should be ABC, 2GB (to rope in the non-footy fans), 2SM (more serious, but still fun AM alternative), MMM (to give the game a quality FM presence).
If the NRL go about excluding quality potential callers of the game, then some serious questions need to be asked like just how much power do Fox/Newslimited have on the game. The only reason why they would stop stations from calling would be to protect pay TV interests. That's why I believe the NRL are quite happy for no coverage of many Saturday night games.
2SM MUST be allowed to call footy next year. They will rope in many disgruntled fans sick of 2GB's style.
Give your fans options MR Gallop and don't point to the ABC who don't always cover league, despite the quality coverage they do offer.
