3-Johnson
2-Gavet
1-Matulino

HM - Mannering and Maumolo

Nice to see a bust over close to the line try by one of forwards...ie Gavet's 2nd half try. Rare type of try for us, and crucial time to basically stop the Broncos comeback and seal the game.

Our forwards defended the middle well, but our backline D still looks super vulnerable - just the broncos weren't slick enough to make the most of it.

Origin win...doesn't mean much to me except a couple of easy points.

I couldn't agree with you more. Benny's contribution to that try is understated. He really bent the line, sucked in 3 or 4 defenders and included injuring Nikorima and then a quick ptb. As a consequence a big hole to the right side that had Blairy trying to cover and Gav basically just had a big shot from Glen to contend with. Typical though of his other try against the chooks!

Vete and Lisone were great off the bench too! Vete especially really needed to step up and I was so glad he did.

GREAT to see the ISP boys making the most of their chances - the Sipley brothers and Satae must be chomping at the bit to get a shot.

The official Dally M points were

3 Johnson
2 RTS
1 Maumalo

yet here Mannering was 2nd, did i miss something. I thought he was solid but no spectacular. Im sure he gets points sometimes for just being named in the team on a tuesday:rolleyes:

The 2 games he was injured it became apparent how incredibly important he is to hold the team together. Got points just for being his usual self, who gives more than anyone else for the team, every single week.

Mannering brought the thing all the other morons on the park don't have; the 1%'ers, the endurance and the sheer willpower. One man comes in and immediately we're no longer defending like a bunch of spastics. We don't need spectacular, there's plenty of that out on the park goofing around.

We've been so spoiled by his ridiculous skill that we almost take it for granted.
He probably won't win our POTY but he's hands down our best player.

His tackling technique is really second to none. He manages to make hard contact, wrap up the arms, and take out the legs to get them to ground quick. That kind of wrestle takes a tremendous amount of upper body strength. And he does it like 50-60 times a game. Bloody legend even if he doesn't excite with ball in hand.

Yep. Mannering got the points purely on the obvious difference in the team highlighted by the abominations served up in his abscence. Also notable that statistically he usually leads our back rowers in almost every important metric (metres, tackles, 1 on 1s, missed tackles) this week was no different, he lead our back row in every key stat.

Be interesting to go back over all the points for the last few seasons - and separate out top 8 or so from bottom 5-6, I imagine Mannering gets big points against the top teams, as do Lillyman and Matulino, whereas SJ is awesome when the opposition aren't much - I know people will say that's because the packs dominant and it's not against the good sides - sure, but sometimes it gets close to parity and the vaunted spine is absent, bottom line is against quality teams at the business end of the season packs seldom get dominated

Johnson just needs to string two dynamic performances together. This week is a prime example. Surely if he comes out swinging again on Friday then we're, again, hard to beat.

This. He won't get Dally M awards because he doesn't do the flashy stuff, but you saw what difference he makes when he's there. From a completely horrendous, pea-hearted D effort to one that stood up. One single player making that difference in a 13-man game. When I do POTY votes it's who I think is the most influential, not the one who necessarily 'won' us the game.

If the season ended today (as opposed to round 26) they'd have rocks in their heads to not have him as POTY. Mind you, the Gav would go close. No one else is even in the conversation.

It's also worth remembering Simon used to be very handy with ball in hand, until he got burdened with a completely shit outfit and had to make all their tackles. He's done what he's had to, to keep this club afloat. Geez I love the bloke.
