I suppose getting outpaced wasn't his fault, but I've seen Mannering defend out in the centres without leaving big yawning gaps like that. You don't necessarily have to have speed to be a good outside defender.

Ken was far worse though, don't think he even laid a hand on a single purple jersey.

What I noticed about Ken was he was about to run down Cronk and he dives trying to ankle tap...he should have put a couple more strides in and tried to get a tackle in. Brandy spotted that too.

Look I thought we played pretty tough last night. Played for the most part to our plans well. I think we ran out of petrol which is concerning.

I had the knife out for Ken after 5 minutes. He's got to get that play the ball error out of his game. It's not good enough. The other one was not contesting a bomb. Other than that he stuck to his task well. Nearly got Cronk, and stopped Melbourne twice in one play.

The disappointment is we are now 3 from 8 with a tough run ahead. But I thought we had a real go and Melbourne had to play very well to beat us.

I was reading through early posts and noticing nobody mentioned Mannering. He was HUGE last night. Couple of later posters did.

That in my view, was the Warriors best performance of the year. they maintained intensity right to the end (well 75 minutes) in what was a pretty intense game. I just wish the refs would ref the storm v anybody consistently. Why do they get to interfere in the ruck constantly and nobody else does.

RTS gets the 3 points, even though Mannering was huge
Mannering 2 points
Ashyford 1 - his defence and reading of the game really good

I'm not sure we were in it for 75 minutes. Looked to me like they were well on top of us for the last 20 minutes. We ran out of steam at that stage and did well to hang on but just didn't have the right decision making and execution when everyone was tired at the end, and the Storm, being the Storm, kept their intensity for the full 80.

Still probably our best performance of the year, and by Bellemy's admission took the Storm's best performance of the year to beat us. But we need to get 2 points. Playing well and losing isn't good enough when you're already slipping down the second half of the ladder.

Oh whoops. Can I change my 1 from Fusitua who was very good to Ayshford who came up with another couple of ripper plays. I'd resign him frankly, he won't cost you much and he's doing his job well.

He's the best centre at the club tbh. And it's not close (though that's still not a high standard).

Kata does one thing well (and even then, has been struggling to do it this year). Aside from that, his defence has regressed back to late 2015, and he either can't or won't set up his outside man... and doesn't take the right option often enough when he has the ball. Those are the three things I look for in a centre first... if he's also a blockbusting runner, that's great - but secondary to actually fulfilling the needs of the position. Ayshford does all three significantly better than Kata. Hopefully Kata can find his way back and start to progress as a centre again, like we saw last year.

With Whare off the board we kind of have to re-sign him (Aysh), surely. I'd look at Lafai too (said it when he was leaving the Dogs, needs repeating), he can do the basics above and play both sides - competition for both spots. We don't really have centre competition right now, and Allwood's spot (and silly money) is coming open.

Seriously, what did Maumalo do wrong ?
The early knock on was questionable but I thought he played well after that.

  1. The early knock on in the play of the ball was horrendous (not questionable) and pretty inexcusable after doing similar errors the previous week.
  2. He turned like the titanic when cronk got on the outside of Thompson and then had a chance to make the try saver with a low tackle but instead went for low percentage ankle tap.
  3. When Storm kicked through early in the count Maumolo had zero anticipation and again turned like the titanic and was burnt by his opposite.
  4. Some of his hit ups were lame, one I remember in particular (others of his were great as per usual).
  5. He didn't contest some bombs he should have (I can't recall but others mentioned).
But apart from that he played with heart and did some good stuff fer sure. He came off his wing to smash the center in one moment of really good defence. Unfortunately he just offers nothing on attack (apart from hit ups for field position) little on defence, plus is error prone.

Despite poor last options I still thought SJ was very good and gave him 3. Ayshford good too and 2 points, while RTS continues to be good down back. 1 point.
