Conservatively I reckon that Shaun Johnson try has cost RL $10 M in media exposure alone..

Bit of a shame really ...

Any real gains in England would have been from them winning the whole thing, which was still a long shot. The final will be massive regardless

That game was a massive boost for Rugby League. Played in London in front of a huge crowd, the game was brilliant. If anything it would have attracted more new fans to the game.

That try turned it into one of the all time great test matches - if not best in the history of England vs NZ.

The media coverage has been massive about the result here in NZ and its only mid day here.

If NZ won by 32-16 or 32-22 all the media coverage would have be minimal as that was expected.

NZ winning the amputee-division of the over-sixties tiddlywinks world champs would be massive here.

I think it's a massive shame. Cheering for New Zealand (if you are an English fan) will not quite be as good as cheering for England.

We tried to cheer for Fiji, but it was very hard to keep people interested in Fiji. I was hoping for another 34-2 or a 34-6 or something.

Also look how many new fans we have picked up, these are from the BBC Sport Comments page...

That was the most amazing game; truly unbelievable & tense!! Horrifically heartbreaking for England. If our national Football team played with as much passion as our Rugby League side did today, then I may begin supporting them.

What. A. Game. Unlucky England and just how good was Sam Burgess. As a Union fan that was something special - power, pace, aggression and skill. Could some of you guys come and have a word with our English RU backline please?

Another Union convert here... riveting stuff.
If all League games are like this I'm in.
Uncontested scrums a bit pointless but saves time and keeps the game flowing. Would like to see a few of the quicker union loosies have a go at the code rather than mostly league to RFU defections.

Tough for the English players - must be the last crack at the WC for a few, given the game's attrition rate?

I must admit to being more of a Union fan but this World Cup was turning me until today, now I am definitely turned, that was a thoroughly entertaining showpiece and worthy of any world final in any sport, let alone a semi, such a shame to lose so dramaticaly and late on but neither team deserved to lose that match unfortunately, someone had too

Union fan, but that was just a PHENOMENAL game of rugby.. Any idiots slating the game need to watch nrl and state of origin for true entertainment and brutal battle. Hats off to England and NZ. Awesome efforts

Scotsman - not really England's biggest fan - but huge admiration for rugby league lads - England so so close today - lost a la Scotland - agonisingly. Deserved better and every man a colossus. Shame that rugby union perennially sniffing round league for players. The game has real soul! Heads up boys - you were magnificent

I am more a Union than League man - but that first New Zealand try was truly something special.

As a union fan, Everyone raves about sonny bill Williams...Sam burgess completely outclassed a world class player today. There are very few sports in the world that not only could match the speed of play, but the ferocious nature of the collisions on show today. Take a bow. Sensational.

Thought it was one of the best rugby matches I've had the pleasure to have gone to. I'm a Union fan but £20 to see a Rugby World Cup Semi Final between Eng and NZ is an absolute bargain. Great game of rugby. In any rugby if you miss a conversion and give away a needless penalty.....sigh!

No RL expert but do catch the odd game and have watched a lot of this championship. Thought the English lads were epic today and scarcely deserved to lose. The Kiwis are a great side but they were under the cosh for long periods today. A loose arm or a dropped pass, such are the margins at this level. Both sides put on a great spectacle. Shame there had to be a losing team.

Caps off from a Union fan. I was glued to this game for the full 80 and it was some of the best display of international test sport on display. Was gutted for England for they were immense all over the pitch, but NZ just poured in for the last 5. I hope this doesn't get them down too much, there's more than enough years and experience to gain in this side for the next WC.

So I think we've made lots of new fans today from Football and Rugby Union today!

We just need to more damn teams!! Fiji were dire and what we really need is France and Wales to be as good as New Zealand.

If France and Wales become as good as New Zealand then Rugby League in England will explode!!

Good to see so many non-RL fans make positive comments about this game, the WC & RL, it's a nice change from the normal negative stuff served up by certain media outlets and shows that this WC has been great for international RL

It was one of the best games at the Elite level that I have ever seen. Nearly every player was flawless. Nearly every player gave their all. Nothing was left on the park. An audience delight.

I'm glad I sat-up for both games, but the NZ/Eng match was something special.

Great post, thanks for sharing all those comments. Hopefully the profits from this tournament will be wisely spent in, A - growing the game world wide and B - raising the playing standard in Countries outside the big 3.

I've never visited the uk. But from what I can gather from friends etc RL runs about 4th or 5th as the most popular sport in England

Soccer
Union
Darts
RL

England appearing in the final and maybe winning it. Would have been great for the game

The population and economy of NZ v UK cannot be compared

I know who the organizers would have been rooting for

That was the best game of Rugby League played for the last few years. This year's GF was a close 2nd.

That was so much better than Origin it isn't funny.

Cricket only picks up interest when there's an Ashes series on. Tennis the same with Wimbledon. The rest of the time it's watched by old men who are retired and can get to games on a Thursday morning when most other people are at work or kids on school holidays. I reckon it's more Soccer, Daylight, Union, League

Is Union ahead of League in all facets? I never heard boo about their club competition.

Prior to union coming out of the shamateurism closet the SL had far bigger average crowds across the board than the top union league but since then the top union club' attendances have grown hugely. Their old boys network in the media gets them far more column inches and airtime than the game deserves. It also brings in better and more lucrative sponsors. The top union division is/was basically a geographical mirror image of league with little presence in the division of Northern clubs.
