40 seconds

You going to penalise every early break from a scrum then?

I wish they would. It would stop these countless instances of the defensive teams gaining an unfair advantage by breaking as soon as the ball is fed.

However, even if they don't, they will always penalise one as blatant as that one was. Even the Storm props had broken ffs. It's ironic that Smith is whinging about that one when he actually caused it. Obviously the Storm are coached to break as the ball is fed, so none of them looked to see that Smith had got a foot to it and was keeping the ball in the scrum.

I think it's funny that Melboring fans and other f*cktards whinge at 2 seconds being taken off their golden grappler for grooming himself, and none mentioned the rort at Wollongong.

Where's Butters to add his touch of genius?

I'm honoured that you value my opinion so much loudy.

I'd love to comment on the penalty for wasting time but i was at the game and i couldn't tell you when the penalty happened. All i remember from the second half is the Gold Coast getting penalty after penalty.

And you could argue that melbourne got ahead because of continuous penalties to them in the first half.

They should have done Bird for time wasting when he was rolling around on the ground like a little girl, then, surprise, surprise, when he wasn't going to get the penalty he played the ball and recovered with amazing speed!

You going to penalise every early break from a scrum then? frick we should save the time and just award a penalty at every scrum.

You AFL converts don't know much about the rules of RL. Like the rule about breaking before the ball is clear of the the scrum. Unless, of course, you like props flattening halfbacks while they are waiting for the ball to appear!

And now you are whinging because a player was injured.

I guess you are ok with grapple tackles too?

And the final word comes from Channel 9, who apologised to Steve Clarke (video ref) because they rechecked the tape and found the penalty was given after 41 seconds. The ref gave the sock puller two warnings, and extra time ffs!

PR - you lost this one!

In case anyone is interested.

Vossy (On the Sunday Roast) said they got it wrong (they being nine) and it was actually over the 40 seconds.

That of course lead Phil onto another this is a stupid rule rant.

Stupid rule or not the refs did nothing wrong. Smith was given a legit penalty.

Can't believe people are bitching about the scrum-break penalty - it was clear they broke before the ball was out.

Gus also raised the point that if the clock was stopped completely and the time wasnt wasted away, then we wouldnt be having this controversy. Of course giving players a breather etc comes into it then though.

I have no problem with either penalty. Technically they were both correct. Where the major problem lies is in consitency of approach. As long as they call EVERY time wasting penalty and EVERY early scrum break then fine. It is when they pick and choose what and when to call that it gets very frustrating, especially when it has a significant impact on the outcome of a game.

not everyone is a smart arse like Smith

Melborings whole front row had broken from the scrum. that happens once in a blue moon as teams know the rules

That scrum break was exceptionally early. The prop could have tacked Preston before the ball came out ffs.

But yeah, should never penalise Melboring because Perth hasn't got a team, and you AFL lovers stick together. Don't let the facts stand in the way of your agenda....

The only controversy I see is the media driven one.

Gus often raises good points.

But when it comes down to it, the points he does raise have no bearing on the rules under which the players of both teams take to the paddock.

Gus may not like the rules. We may not like the rules. However these are the rules. The players know them. The coaches know them.

I would like to know what Gus has done to change these rules he dislikes so much other then bitch about them.

That was one of the worst/earliest scrum breaks i have ever seen

The Storm push everything they can to the absolute limit....they do it well and is one of the main reasons behind their success.

They push the rules and the officials to the limit and have for a long time.

They put it to the refs to make a call and on Friday for one of the first times the officials made two correct calls and look at the sooking and winging.

The only thing 'unusual' about the calls is that things like this are usually let go for the Storm.

Brown said it best.

"Melbourne play within the rules that our game and and our officials allow them to....."

"For years it would have been very easy for the game to change and stop them, but they dont want to change"

Smith is a smart arse

What was their cry a couple of seasons ago???

Integrity.... thats it

Yeah lots of integrity and playing within the spirit of the game...

The worst thing is they would still be great without all this sh*t

They can play tough and control the speed of the game with a quick line speed and controlling the speed of the ruck. All the f**king sh*t that slater, quinn, smith, blair and co. go on with to push the officials and the rules to the limit only makes them look like a buch of pricks and makes the game much less attractive as a product....

Put your hand up Melbourne and say yep, we broke way too early, and yep we usually are so disciplined and push the rules to the brink really successfully, but we were a second off on friday night.

Show some integrity....
