40 Year Origin Sides

Hayne was never going to be picked with his outstanding criminal charges. The NRL will do everything they can to distance themselves from him at the moment.

It's what I'd pick, not what I expect selectors to pick.

As Vee said in the original post - I too thought this was picked by fans. If they've used that rationale against Hayne then so be it. I just pick the best players in my opinion, and he's one of them.

Yeah. Bird and Gal were shocking Origin players. They thought that Origin was just about niggling, and forgot that they needed to win the game.

Between those two and Farah, our late tackle attacking options in good ball were stifled for several years.

So you blame 3 x forwards for stifling our attack....... Great logic.

Greg Bird -
  • 18 games for NSW.
  • 3 x MOTM - Equal 7th of all time along with Ricky Stuart, Ben Elias and another shocking origin player in Darren Lockyer.

Paul Gallen -
  • 24 Games for NSW (3rd most games for NSW behind Fittler and Ettingshausen).
  • 2 x MOTM's - Equal with fellow origin shocker Billy Slater, and more than other shockers like Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, Brett Kenny, Steve Menzies, Anthony Minichiello, Steve Walters, Shane Webcke, Gorden Tallis and Greg Inglis.
  • Player of the Series 2014 (Wally Lewis Medal).

I’m not sure that motm awards are necessarily the greatest guide. many unworthy recipients have been awarded them.

And the three forwards definitely stifled our attack. Feel free to go and watch those games again. They were constantly over calling the ball on tackle 4.

That’s fair enough. Forgive my cynicism. I was just pointing out that Hayne wasn’t going to be listed on the team, regardless of the outcome of the fan poll.

I beg to differ.

Between them they got 5 x MOTM awards against the "great Qld era".. They were a big part of the reason we were even in the contest in most series. These were the only two guys who consistently threw themselves into the teeth of the Qld forward pack, year on year. They did what they did to rattle their cage, get under their skin, whatever it took to get their side a win.

In the 40 year history of the series - only one other forward has won more MOTM than Greg Bird, and that's Cameron Smith. A hooker. And only Smith, Elias and Bird have won more MOTM's than Gallen. So take out the hookers (play makers)....these two rank 1 & (equal) 2 in terms of MOTM in State of Origin HISTORY.

You might be unworthy of the odd MOTM award. But not 2. or 3. And definitely not against the quality of opposition these two played.

Forgot to also mention - Paul Gallen won the Wally Lewis Medal - player of the series - in 2014. The first since Blue since Minichiello in 2005 and only James Tedesco has won it since.

To suggest they are shocking couldn't be more absurd in my opinion. I have watched many of those games again in recent weeks. And without these two - we'd have been absolutely mowed.

It's all good and well to play in winning sides and look like a superstar when your team is on a roll. But when year after year you're up against the best era in origin history, and being beaten more than you win (even if only pipped), you want guys in your trench who just keep charging. That's these two. And thats why I have them in my all-time best.

All good, and I understand. Its a real shame in my opinion - everything that's transpired after returning to Aus from the USA etc - the allegation, the alleged victim included. But re Hayne's reputation its tarnished what was really one of the best players since the turn of the century IMO. And yep, he'll miss out on "official" recognition because of it, even if not proven in court etc.

So Tedesco has already done enough in his career (at whatever level) to replace Mini as NSW's best/favourite fullback? Mini was a serious threat to Lockyer's position as the game's greatest pre-Slater fullback, not sure Tedesco is at that level (yet).

1. Mini
2. ET
3. Gasnier
4. Daley
5. Hayne
6. Kenny
7. Johns
8. Lazarus
9. Elias
10. Harrogan
11. Sironen
12. Clyde
13. Fittler (c)

14. Roach
15. Carroll
16. Kennedy
17. Wing

For me he hasn't quite yet but Mini can play wing so I can have both. Two best outside backs NSW have had in the last 20 years in my opinion.

As a Qlder, Hayne still stands out as the only consistently genuine threat to us in our dominant years. Arrogant as it sounds he's the one back youse had that would have made the Qld side easily.

Slater
Boyd
Inglis
Hodges
Folau
Lockyer
Cronk
Thurston
Tate
Tonga

Also throw in guys like Yow Yeh, K Hunt..

Crikey that’s an arsenal the US army would envy..

And I agree that while I bleed blue (but still know who Jason Smith is..), Hayne is the only guy we had who was on the same level.

Game 100 was my favourite SOO match of all time. The fiercest, toughest, most exciting game I recall. But for all the physicality, if it weren’t for Hayne we’d have lost.

I just went back through some old team lists again of that era... geez how both states have fallen off a cliff in the last two years. I think only a handful of blues could make the team of 5 years ago.. and no qlders. Sad.

Let me just remind you of the 2015 game 3 side

Dugan
Hopoate
J Morris
M Jennings
B Morris
Pearce
Hodkinson
Woods
Ennis
Tamou
Scott
Hoffman
Gallen

Merrin
Cordner
Klemmer
Jackson

Half of them in their 2015 form might make the current team if you are very lucky.

I can't take a side that starts Gallen over Clyde seriously. Unless we want our side to lose.
Tend to agree with this, but Clyde is a 1980's-90's style lock. The position description has changed. He would be a wide forward these days I suspect. Gallen was a prop with 13 on his back who often thought he was a half (but in his defence he did have Pearce in the side most of his Origin career).

From the current crop I’d have Tedesco...

And....

Cook, Saifiti...

That’s it.

Keep the rest of 2015.

Hayne is up there. Mini probably makes that team too at his peak.
