Clarke really should not be at 4 in a ODI, he cloggs up the balls. Put him at 6 and that way he'll be forced to tee off and at least he will either hit our or get out!

Clarke was a big part in that chase failing. The balls he use up; the lack of confidence he instilled and the timing of losing his wicket were probably roughly equivalent to the difference between the teams.

Smith and Hussey both needed to bowl more overs but Clarke was clueless

To be fair Strauss had the obvious advantage of having seen where we succeeded and failed with our bowling before he had to make any calls on bowlers himself. I very much doubt Trott would have bowled a single over if Australia had batted first. Very easy in hindsight to say Clarke got it wrong, but it would have been a big call not to bowl the four main quicks. In hindsight we can say he should have left Smith and Hussey on for the Batting power play, but what if the batsmen were simply able to smash them over the top for a few fours anyway? They looked great with the protection out, but that's no guarantee they would have kept it tight with the field in.

Batting first was a huge advantage, and in the end the only difference was that we didn't have Watson or another batsman go on and score a big one. Clarke's batting is obviously a problem (along with White, Hussey, and even Marsh apart from Hobart), but the Captaincy has been pretty good.

Clarke's record as ODI captain

22 games 16wins 6 losses, with an average of 44 with the bat.

The Clarke hate is amazing, I will not argue he is having a poor summer with the bat.

Class players have form slumps, if anything this is good as he will come good during the World Cup.

7 One dayers V England don't mean a lot, even then we 3-1 up.

Just indicative of the public being fickle when a team is struggling...

clarkes captaincy is great.i'm liking whats going on in that department.

but his batting is abysmal and really starting to hurt us.

once punter comes back we'll be back to unenlightened captaincy and clarke scoring nothing substantial.

bring on the world cup.:sarcasm:

shows how much we miss mike hussey in ODIs.

He would have found a way to get us across the line but to be honest we conceded too many runs. 12 runs off the first over and they won by 21.

Impressed with Smith and the way Clarke uses him. Dussey bowled well but he and Victorian White should score at a quicker rate.
