I read on another forum about a huge stink being kicked up over today's game (as well as the other ODIs this summer, excluding the ones held in Perth) being shown in Perth on 3hr delay (starting at 5pm AEDST). In today's age where digital channels and other technology exist, are cricket games still being shown on delay, let alone 3 hours? Must suck to be a sandgropper, not to mention that they - along with Adelaide and Hobart - have a blackout on matches held in their cities which are not sold-out (i.e. like the old days, only the first two hours of an ODI and the 3rd session of a test match are shown in the host city if a match doesn't sellout). This blackout was lifted from Sydney and Melbourne in the 2005/06 season (I don't know about the situation involving in Brisbane)

I checked the tv guide and that is correct. Funnily enough, with Adelaide and Brisbane (which are in different timezones to AEDST), the cricket is live on Ch9 and shown on GEM during that 30min period which coincides with the 6pm news (which is shown on the main channel whilst the cricket is on GEM). This raises two questions:

1) If Ch9 are able to do that with Adelaide and Brisbane, why not with Perth? Seems like the sandgroppers just can't take a trick from Ch9
2) An even bigger issue (which definitely has been mentioned several times on the NRL forums): if Ch9 shows the game on GEM - albeit for 30 minutes - is it safe to say that Ch9 has HD cameras at the ground (or is it like the AFL where although it is shown on 7Mate in NSW/QLD, the game isn't shown in HD?) especially since the highlights are replayed on Fox Sports and furthermore, Fox Sports HD channel tonight? If this is the case, why can't Ch9 show the game in HD? We are so far behind the rest of the world (especially since we can watch matches in England using HD since Sky Sports broadcasts in HD)

So much for that Conrad guy in parliament putting in all this legislation on the anti-siphoning list regarding games being shown at a 'reasonable time'. I guarantee you the ABC would definitely not do something like that. I fully understand any cricket fans in the west wanting to tune out of the coverage knowing it's on 3hr delay (knowing the 1st innings will be already over 30 odd so minutes into their telecast). Unless they can hijack an illegal stream from overseas, that is their only hope.

But yeah, the HD thing is something that has annoyed me about Ch9 for quite sometime (not just with cricket, but more importantly with the NRL. I'm sure I'm not the only NRL fan who's had the green apple splatters).

And finally, I agree...Gyngell is a tosser of the highest order.
