I like the idea but some have reservations about the ruck with one ref but i think anything that will open up the game is worth it. Question : Will this benefit or hinder our side this season ?

It should benefit us as lower ranked teams often don’t seem to get the rub of the green with 2 refs IMO.
We get double the ‘prejudiced’ calls.
Like having 2 ‘one-eyed refs’
.... as mum used to yell from the sidelines

Fewer officials means fewer of our anal retentive refs looking to blow the whistle for those nitpicking marginal calls.

Natural errors if I can call them that, tend to balance out over a season, whereas ref imposed/detected errors, with often a team or personality prejudice involved, have severely impacted some teams since the dual ref policy.

A bit a freelancing in the ruck is part of being coached how to get away with what you can, so if Mary can’t match Bellamy in the nous department per se, we lose out - as is obvious.

If Waterboy’s newest assistant is to be Gal, then he & Flanno will certainly increase our ruck IQ

Linesmen seem to have swallowed the rulebook of late

My view
1 ref...would achieve more that 2 refs do now as they could actually get the linesman to do and watch more like they used to and also make decisions on the run..
They could even mark the 10 for defence when the ref needed to hang around the ruck.

6 again. Not much diffrence in a team getting a penalty and taking a quick tap. Only difference will be ref not blowing the pea. Players will find a way to slow or disrupt that quick play on scenario anyway via feigning injury.

Anything where the refs take more control and stop taking crap and other slowing tactics from the players, stop the ongoing coaching and holding the game up to explain rules over a cup of tea will be an advancement they should focus on.
The only thing that would would benefit the Dragons ATM is to not have to defend or have one of the opposition play for us.

It couldn't be any worse.
In most games we are picked on by one or both the refs who seem to have an agenda against the dragons.
At least with one ref, if we fluke an unbiased ref, he won't be over-ruled by the other ref.

Sometimes its not bias but we are seen as an soft touch where some refs can act dominant and confident about borderline calls.
Then the Ref's boss comes out and shows the refs he has their back.
Then the judiciary comes out and makes an example out of the dragons incident and shows how serious they are about enforcing the rules.....all of a sudden.....for just a while.

Any rule change simply provides the likes of Storm and Rorters the opportunity to manipulate to their advantage. I am certain that the smarter teams are already working out how to use to their advantage.

These teams will take full advantage of only one set of refs eyes by either rorting the 10 metres or manipulating the ruck (read the return of Smith playing at the ball on the refs blind side)
I also believe the team getting 6 again in their own half will result in teams being less concerned about giving away penalties as the benefiting team wont be able to kick for yardage advantage. A more sensible rule would have been keep the rule as is except for 6 again only in the offending teams half (or quarter)

So the brains trust that includes Pearce think this is a good rule.

Under the old rule if you infringed in the ruck on tackles 1 or 2 of a set especially in the opposition 20 the added penalty was the distance gained from the free kick which also returned the tackle count to 6 to go.

These idiots have just removed that disincentive.

The penalty is now less than before so it will encourage infringements especially in the first couple of tackles and not deter it.

The team that was infringed against is the loser and the people giving up the penalty the winner.

The NRL just keep on doing dumb stuff.

OT..think you will find they are bringing this into the attacking zone infringements
However I agree, ref to the rules, penalise, and allow em quick taps and get rid of the time wasting ref lectures and stop warning 3 times, 1 warning then bin em, infringing sides will get tired eventually

Valandy's knows one of the real problems with the game is it being run by the coaches and the media. The media swoon over the coaches for stories ( that explains a bit of the Mary love, cant upset your sources ) and the coaches are not game to do anything different ( wrestling for example ) so the status quo remains. This was proven by the Wayne Pierce forum where the coaches basically wanted everything to change but valandys set this up as a kangaroo court and did what he wanted to do anyhow ! Most fans objections have been the slow down of the game and when they get a snip of a game in the 80's & 90's cant believe what a spectacle it can be.Body shape is an issue as well and perhaps a faster game will result in the Dufftys of the world having a greater presence & more importantly would open up the game at junior level for them as well.

All good points
And watch how those games were officiated in respect to commentary on the run, player respect and how much linesman get inside to get involved especially from the 80s
