I know I've always advocated that T20 and ODIs shouldn't be used for contention into the test side. However, if I was prepared to make a concession to that rule and offer a wildcard to only one player in the Australian team a place in the 1st Test at Brisbane, George Bailey surely would get the gong over other contenders (or pretenders, depending on which way you look at it) such as Mitchell Johnson and Glen Maxwell.
I honestly cannot believe the selectors think Johnson is the bowler we need. Our problem is NOT with our bowling in tests, it is with our batting. If Johnson is selected, the Poms will be licking their lips and hope he bowls like he did in the 1st test of the 2010/11 series (which, along with the 2nd test 2009 at Lord's, was one of the worst displays of fast bowling I've ever seen). However, if you seen Johnson start to appear in tv ads or endorsing products in the lead-up to the Ashes, I 99% guarantee you he will be selected. Sponsors play a major role in asserting who should be in the side
