7/10 dropping the ball on TV rights?!

Merry (belated) Christmas, war is effin over, young man!!!

Nine has suffered a richly deserved defeat today, with the AFL announcing that networks 7 & 10 have won the rights to broadcast AFL for the years 2007-2011 (inclusive).

ALL games to be shown free-to-air!!!

Its a triumph for the game and for the fans! :thumb :C:

This is how I responded to the announcement that the 7/10 consortium had won the TV rights back on 5 January of this year.

While my general distrust and dislike of 9 hasn't altered since, I must admit to feeling a little duped by Channel 7.

As I see it, the 7/10 consortium (under the terms of their offer) have an obligation to have all games being shown across Australia from next season on. News that 7 is seriously considering utilisation of community Channel 31 to meet its broadcasting commitments...

Channel 31 is unacceptable because:

a) its not an option in some areas (Canberra, most notably); and

b) it positively reeks of amateur hour.

The new season isn't with us yet and already 7 needs to lift its game. Its time that it forgot about its old grudge with Foxtel and worked a dinkum deal to ensure a wide and professional coverage for 2007.

some one has to fill the void created by the deletion of Fox Footy channel

so now we are back to waiting for the adds to finish before the umpires can bounce the ball

Admittedly it does smack of gamesmanship, but the prospect of AFL football on Channel 31 is just so patently ridiculous that you almost have to believe it.

With the deal done in early-January, they really should have had everything bedded down by the start of the 2006-07 financial year (at the latest).

Seven's enmity toward Foxtel is leading it into dubious business territory and hurting its own image.

They need to get over it and then get on with it...

It's Foxtel causing the problem.

7 want a sports channel on Foxtel. Foxtel are refusing them access.

You're living in the past, man!

You're all hung up on old bygone C7 issues, man!

So are Channel 7, it would seem, and they need to get over it.

The current issue is that Foxtel want to broadcast 3-4 games from next season on FoxSports 3. Channel 7 really needs them to do this to offset costs and avoid taking massive ratings hits in key timeslots in RL regions. In spite of this, Channel 7 are overwhelmed by old C7 bitterness and are duly holding the eagle til it screams.

Its time to get it sorted.

At a much reduced price than what they were prepared to pay PBL as part of their combined bid.

C7 rightly are standing their ground and are not prepared to be ripped off by Fox Sports.

The PBL bid was for a fair mix of the good and bad games, however 7/10 are wanting to offload the 3-4 games that they consider "scraps", I can see why Foxtel wouldn't want to pay so much.

Right you are, Jedster.

Which is also to say nothing of the fact that the 7/10 consortium have had almost 11 months to arrange a deal with Foxtel and that's an eternity in corporate terms.

The reality is that Channel 7 were too blinded by past grudges early in the piece, hence their waiting for months before seriously entertaining genuine negotiations.

Now is not the time for blithe Channel 7 apologism!

They've performed poorly over the issue and need to lift and lift quickly.

The "game" seems to be getting a lot more serious.

On closer inspection, no party is coming out of this shambles well.

Seven have been poor from day one, and we really should expect better conduct from an experienced and professional organisation.

Foxtel have also failed to impress, but in fairness to them, they've clearly been hamstrung by the sabotaging behaviour of their all-powerful PBL backers.

The AFL has, for mine, been caught on the hop through not firmly specifying quality standards for the broadcasting of its product.

I can't believe that they'd stand for Australia's number one sport being shown restrictively on a hobby station! They'll be a laughing stock if it happens.
