It is official guys... hopefully this has a positive effect on Storm and Rugby League exposure in other states, but particularly down here. It certainly can't hurt anyway

I think it will affect my club(Melbourne Storm) for the better.

One main thing is that the Storm does not need to complete to the 10 other AFL clubs.

More competitive timeslot for All RL Games incl. Internationals and State of Origin.

and third and final point, THANK GOD CHANNEL EDDIE WILL CHANGE IT NAME TO CHANNEL NINE AGIAN.

Does it affect your club and is it good news for Rugby league in General?
Are you f**king stupid? it has nothing to do with my club. What effects my club dickhead, is the timeslots teh South Melbourne Swans dictate to teh SCG trust....the same f**king time my team is playing next door...fuelling complete morons like yourself to bag out my club about crowds.

Its a good thing Easts do well in the crowd averages...proving that South Melbourne swans belong in f**king South Melbourne.

I could be.;-)

But the question should have been how does it efffect the Storm...not "your" club....because it doesnt effect MY club. The dickheads that are sucked into Swans games do though.

How would it be any different to giving some untried show a go?

From a networks executive perspective, their thinking would be any sports fan s in Melbourne are going to be watching the AFL.

Better to show a non-sports show against the AFL and hope to capture some of the market which does not follow sports then put a weaker rating sports show against the AFL and not get any sports fans and not get any non-sports fans.

Not saying this is the right way of thinking or not, just that it's how the marketing and tv execs will be thinking...

Channel Nine know they will get flogged in the ratings by Seven or Ten if they run NRL against AFL in any market besides NSW and QLD (and even Southern NSW is a gamble). Given ratings will be a close battle between Nine and Seven this year (the AFL might just be enough for Seven to win the year outright), Nine will have to be as competitive as possible against AFL - so no League coverage in Melbourne during primetime.

Just like AFL in NSW and QLD!

Exactly Green Machine - we occasionally get live Friday night games out here because we are on the Southern States TV schedule, but Sydney never ever gets a live Friday night game of AFL - and why would they? It would just feed more rating points to Nine.

I read somewhere that the AFL rights are worth up to 2 rating points for the year nationally - that will just about be enough to get Seven the ratings win for the year. If they get the ratings win for the year, it could be worth up to $20 Million in additional advertising revenue per year. The scheduling of programming will be very important this year and thats why you wont see Seven taking a punt on AFL against NRL and Nine taking a punt on NRL against AFL on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.

From what I understand Nine only had one shot at making a bid which Packer oversaw. The Seven/Ten bid had 2 chances but paid $20 Million for the priviledge - so even if Packer was alive Seven/Ten would have still won.

What I want to know is why the NRL don't sell the "final right to bid" themselves - what a great revenue source!

yes because that was kerry's last bid and ch7 + 10 always had the last right to trump it

The reason the NRL don't do this is simple. They're idiots. We're talking about an organisation that let the missing link Gorden Tallis onto its board.

Yeah, but 10 might be willing to take a ratings hit that 9 won't!
Channel Ten's Melbourne news (I am in Albury at the moment) basically said Seven will get Friday night and Sunday afternoon, Ten will get Saturday to themselves, and they will screen 2 grand finals each - the 2007 Grand Final will be decided by the toss of a coin! Whoever screens the Grand Final gets 5 finals games that year compared to the other station getting 4.

So Seven gets the Friday night game - Nine wont put League up against AFL down south.

AFL in prime time in Sydney does not rate. It runs 5th out the 5 stations between 9, 10, 7, SBS or ABC if Rugby League is on or not on. Happens quite regularly on a Saturday night

The 2 ratings points is debatable. Ratings are won between 5.30pm-7.30pm Monday to Friday. The way Channel 7 is going in this time slot it is just a matter of time before they take over from Channel 9 nationally.

You must be reading something I haven’t read. The Damian Barrett article a few days ago has already said the AFL was taking more cash over less coverage in NSW and QLD;

”Removing the pledges to broadcast live or near live in the northern states will mean that ratings losses -- and therefore advertising dollar losses -- are not sustained in New South Wales and Queensland.”
