I was only discussing at Karella on Friday night with old mate spirt of league if one of Sharkcasts summer specials will be the return of Newman to break down what happened when he left.

Could rival the Opes episodes.

Good to see you @Frank Discussion
How are you Slads!
I don’t know why anyone would be interested but to my surprise more than a few people have suggested that very thing. I floated the idea with Sam. He’s changed the subject very quickly so I imagine he’d rather focus on other matters.

Interesting that in all that time we have had fewer than 10 truly elite spine players. Recruitment problem? NRL problem? Probably a bit of both.

99, 01, 02 were definitely missed opportunities. Even this year.

08, 18, 24 got done by the storm or Penrith. Bloody good sides.

16 we won.

there’s plenty of ways you can look at it. I don’t like accepting mediocrity or losing, but sometimes you get beaten by a better team. How many players are storm fans wanting to move on from their team and upgrade for instance as opposed to ours?

sometimes it fees like there are supporters that actually enjoy or get pleasure out of us losing, so it somewhat fits whatever narrative they are trying to spin.

The angst of a sharks supporter.
99, 01 + 02 pretty sure a part of me died during that period.
I absolutely loved that period of time for so many reasons.
Probally why Friday night didn’t hurt that bad. Anyone who witnessed 1999 will know, there was no worse day as supporter I can remember.

They're just not that common, hence the elite tag.

And the rich clubs get them.

The fact that we are the only non rich club to win one in 10 years, and that was largely through discards, shows how rubbish the cap is. (Though I don't begrudge Penrith as they either breed or buy discards)

99 was tough, man we had a good team and deserved so much more!

I remember an interview with Martin Lang at the beginning of that season.
His dad was a bit of an innovator.

They played no trial games. Just in-house sessions. They gave away the least number of penalties and very high completions.
Langy had them humming.

Maybe during that halftime break the GF might have been mentioned.

My most active years as a pure supporter were 2002-2012. Man there was a lot of shit in period. A lot of conversations went like “all I want is to regularly be a contender in September”.

So here we are.

We are in a bit of a golden age at the moment really, it’d just be nice to take it up one more level.

totally agree. It feels like there is a window of opportunity there at the moment which is why this feels like such a wasted opportunity to at least not make the GF, but we are just missing one or two pieces of the puzzle. If we go into next season without a couple of changes then it’ll be a worry that we are happy with accepting mediocrity and being there or there abouts.

It's a 30 year time period with wildly different squads, coaches, competitors and the game changed enormously over that time period.

I don't really know if there is much to be gained comparing eras.

That being said the Fitz era certainly warrants close inspection especially if the club doesn't get any better or in fact moved backwards next year.
