One thing I learnt is that the prize money involved is ridiculous. We got more money for reaching the Semis than we did for finishing top of the NRL table last season. Ludicrous.
I think clubs take it seriously for different reasons than what it was intended for. Clubs who bring fringe players are doing that not only to protect the big guns, but also to really test the quality of those who won't see much game time during the regular season. For us, we used Young Tonumaipea as co captain. Sometimes that can give a player a great deal confidence leading into the season proper. If clubs treat the nines with respect, they'll find that they can use it to their advantage.
Not sure how i'd change the format to gauge more interest, however change of venue every year might be an option
