We all acknowledge that there are some serious fundamental structural problems with the team. Our spine is dysfunctional on many levels as follows:
1. Dugan good player but unfortunately he lacks the skill set required for fullbacks in the modern game; namely being able to pass and create opportunities. Perhaps he is best suited on the wing where he can run that bash and barge rubbish.
2. Widdop the less said the better.
3. Marshall I am not sure if I am sad or embarrassed for him. He is truly on old legs.
4. Rein an honest toiler who just takes too many wrong options.
These players are the custodians of our attack and frankly that is very, very worrying.
However I have come to the conclusion that the real problem lies with the coach. I have supported Mary and I like the bloke but he does appear to be a long way off competent. Worryingly also is that he appears inflexible and pig headed. Surely now is the time to be brave and to throw out the playbook and to give the team the license to attack?
However this would require making decisions on nearly all of those players listed above. Whilst I understand that Shaun Nona is not contracted and is probably not 1st grade fit; his vision and passing game is better than any of the 4 amigos listed above. Do we give young Dufty a run at fullback? Should Milne be given 6 games to show us what he has? Should Kurt Mann be given a go at # 6?
As an aside; whilst it is hard not to have great admiration for Ben Hornby and Dean Young is it best that they are assistant coaches to a novice coach in Mary? Wouldnt it be better that went to the UK for instance and spent a few years working in different systems before returning?
We need a coach with both pedigree and absolutely no prior allegiance to the Dragons. What a super job Neil Henry is doing at the Gold Coast for example under very difficult circumstances. We need a 1st grade standard coach and a good young half-back. Watch us go if we get these two ingredients right.
A coach, a coach, our kingdom for a coach!
