Hope NZ get it.

Going off reports from someone who was in townsville during the world cup, could hardly find a pub with the soccer on. "we show the league here, and that's how its going to stay" was the attitude. Insuler area.

Give it to NZ and if not them Wollongong is an untapped market really, after the failure that was the wolves and well put together side that cut any of the ethnic rivalry bullsh*t associated with the local clubs would be IMO a sucess

Indeed that doesnt surprise me in the least.

Although i think that attitude will change with a local team.Wollongong would be great and should be apart of the a-league and FYI wollongong wolves are very much around there in the state league. If central coast and Newcastle can be popular i think wollongong can be too.

I see it this way in the future.

QLD: 3 teams
NSW: 4 teams
Victoria: 1 team
SA: 1 team
WA: 1 team
ACT: 1 team
NZ: 1 team

or put it in real terms.

Gold Coast
North queensland
Queensland
Wollongong
Central Coast
Newcastle
Sydney
Melbourne
Adelaide
Perth
Canberra
Wellington.

12 team competition by 2011/2012 season.

And the same has always been said of Newcastle, yet they were beating their crowd records consistently towards the end of the season. People will turn out to see a winning side if it plays entertaining football. The belief that certain sports can't find support in certain areas is crap.

London = Best city in the world (along with Sydney)

Sadly, it looks like a year stop over in Seoul is my first port of call

As a Townsville resident i will disagree. Give the region a national marbles team and they'll watch it and get coverage. The Crocs are very popular up here, get plenty of air time and tonnes of publicity. Im certain that if a national football team gained emtry then they would receive the same support as it is also during the league offseason.

Oh i know wolves are still around in the state league, but they are sparsely supported due to the fact that many of the best player play in the local clubs rather than state league, and the general bullsh*t that goes on in illawarra soccer

Yet you completely ignore that arguement when it is in reference to a NZ team.

When has anyone in NZ ever had the chance to support a semi decent football team? Never. (In reference to the Kingz/Knights)

The Warriors aren't much better either. About 12 years in existence and they've been nothing special for about 10 of them.

Combined Darwin/Singapore side?

That doesn't scream f**k up to anyone else?

Having another kiwi team after kings/knights doesn't scream f**k up to you?

To be fair, I have no gripe against NZ on its own, I just don't see why we'd want to help them as long as we're in different confederations. And even if they do qualify for Asia, that's even more reason not to help them.

When it comes to confederations, I really think that they should divide Asia into two. One for the west Asian/African nations, and one for South-East Asia and the Pacific.

If the next team isn't as horribly mismanaged as the previous disasters, then no.

If we're headed down the same road (which seems highly unlikely IMO) then it is a f**k up.

The fact is, the Knights were never a NZ team. They were the shop window for NZ football but the team was packed full of european and asian hacks.

They looked a lot better with more young Kiwis and Aussies in the team towards the end of the season.

Soccer: New Zealand secures A-League bid

By Terry Maddaford

A-League soccer

A Wellington-based New Zealand team will play in soccer's third A-League season.

Football Federation Australia will name the eighth team for the 2007-08 Hyundai A-League today or, at the very latest, tomorrow with the John Dow-led Wellington franchise set to get the nod.

While FFA operations manager Matt Carroll last night refused to confirm the New Zealand bid will "get across the line", the strong indications are that is now the case.

Carroll and FFA chief executive Ben Buckley met in their Sydney offices last night and later called chairman Frank Lowy, who is overseas. There was no statement after that meeting but it appears there continues to be a strong backing for New Zealand's bid.

"If Frank Lowy agrees with our recommendation then there will be an announcement on Friday," said Carroll. "If he wants it referred to the board it will need another 24 hours."

Lowy has always strongly supported a New Zealand team playing in the league.

The Wellington-based bid had been pitched into a two-horse race with Townsville-backed Tropical Football, with both consortiums given the opportunity to plead their cases.

The strong change of opinion in favour of Dow's bid follows a meeting in Wellington on Wednesday between New Zealand Soccer chairman John Morris and chief executive Graham Seatler, at which the initial funding of $1.2 million was guaranteed. This suggested a new investor had appeared.

"A key element is having the money up front," said Morris. "It is no good just having promissory notes. We still have some of those, but they will be chased up once the licence is granted. We do not want to risk another Knights fiasco and that is not the case now."

The New Zealand bid's chances of succeeding were further underlined yesterday with a story in the Townsville Bulletin which said: "Wellington could be set to win the race for the vacant A-League licence after securing a financial backer." The story went on to say: "and in further bad news for Townsville, the Gold Coast is set to launch an audacious last-minute bid in the unlikely event New Zealand loses its licence."

Carroll dismissed any suggestion of Gold Coast staking a late claim.

Seatter said in discussions he had had with the FFA there was a pretty clear message that the licence was there for the taking and that it "looks like we have got up".

Provided New Zealand could meet the deadline and fulfil all requirements - which now appears to be the case - there was a feeling from Seatter last night "we are in".

There is now some urgency for coach-in-waiting Ricki Herbert, who is aware that at least one Australian-based All White has been given until today as a deadline to sign a new contract.

Herbert, keen to sign as many New Zealand players as possible, needs an answer to ensure he is not left any further behind in the all-important recruitment race.

I dont think I've seen anyone come forward with any compelling arguments as to how it is in the benefit of australian football to have an a-league side in NZ

You obviously have missed the countless 'Don't be narrow minded' and 'New Zealand deserve to be there' arguments. All of them comprised of inescapable logic and subtle wit.

Apart from extra TV rights through Sky Sports and a hell of a lot of potential (see also: money) there isn't much.

The 'money' hasn't exactly been forthcoming. As it is, the Glen Innes Highlanders could draw a better crowd.

How much extra TV money would there be, given the deal in Australia was got maximum punch by linking the a=league rights to socceroos rights?
