A MESSAGE FROM MATT HANSON, MELBOURNE STORM C.E.O
Dear Melbourne Storm member,
Its been a big week for the Melbourne Storm with our long serving C.E.O Brian Waldron resigning his position at the Club to take up a career opportunity elsewhere. Hes done a wonderful job at the Storm during his five year tenure and Im sure youll all join me when I say thank you to him for his efforts and wish him all the best for the future.
Having said that, its now time for the Storm to move on, and for myself personally to get stuck into the job. Given the major developments taking place this year, everyone at the Club is keeping their eyes on the job at hand. As far as everyone is concerned it is business as normal, and thats the way it should be.
However, there will be nothing normal about 2010 as we turn up the volume!
Moving into our brand new home presents us all with an exciting period coming up for the Melbourne Storm. It gives us the opportunity to provide our amazing members the chance to experience rugby league in Victoria like never before. The furtherest seat in our new stadium is closer to the action than the closest seat at Olympic Park. You will be so close to the action youll be able to feel every tackle and hear every call. Youll literally feel like youre a part of the action itself.
This year we are aiming to have 10,000 members for the very first time, and given the new state of the art facilities we are moving into, this is a very realistic target. It is vital that all of our supporters become members and join the Storm family, particularly this year. Our members are the fabric of our great Club, and when our new membership program is released on February 1st, I know youll all agree the membership packages on offer are exciting and offer something for everyone.
But its not only our membership packages that are exciting. What we will be able to offer in terms of corporate hospitality is like nothing weve ever been able to offer before. We now have a venue with a 1,100 dining patron capacity, and 18 corporate suites where fans can experience a Storm event in the ultimate comfort. And all within a stones throw from the action. Youll be so close that when Greg Inglis makes one of those customary breaks down the wing that only G.I can do, youll feel the wind rush past as he puts in the big strides.
On the field there is no bigger challenge in professional sport than to defend a title. Last year the Storm won both the NRL and NYC premierships, but that was 2009. As we always do here at the Storm, we are constantly looking forward, always looking at ways to get better. We are now focusing our efforts totally on 2010.
We want to build our new home into the kind of fortress The Graveyard was. A place teams feared to go, knowing that when they stepped onto the park they would face the best team in the competition, along with the loudest and most passionate supporters in the land. With your help, theres no reason why this cant be achieved at our new home.
Our squad for 2010 should also get our members excited for the coming season. While we have lost some quality players in the off-season, we have recruited well once again and promoted seven players from our 2009 premiership winning under-20s squad. Never before have we had such an influx of young talent promoted to the senior squad from within the Club before in our history, and I for one am excited by our ability to develop our own players, and provide all players in Victoria with a clear pathway to the NRL. The fruits of these efforts in recent years will be realised this year when some of these young players make their first-grade debuts.
This year will also be the first time we have our NSW Cup team based in Melbourne. This means we now have four Melbourne Storm teams based here, the first time that has ever happened in our history. Our SG Ball (under-18) and NYC (under-20) teams provide a pathway for junior players into the NRL, and now having our best VRL players joining the Clubs NSW Cup side provides yet another route into the Melbourne Storm system.
There truly has never been a better time to be a Melbourne Storm member than now, which is why I was so excited when the Board presented me with this amazing opportunity to take over the reigns from Brian. I can assure you I will be doing everything in my power to ensure the continued success and growth of the Melbourne Storm and the game of Rugby League in this state.
Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian on behalf of the Board and myself for his magnificent contribution to the Melbourne Storm. It says great things about this Club when people of Brians and Michael Maguires calibre are headhunted to play key roles in other organisations. We wish Brian every success in his new role and again thank him for his contribution to the Storm family.
I look forward to 2010 with much anticipation. Remember to show your true support for the Storm by becoming a member.
For me it just doesnt get any more exciting than Melbourne Storm in 2010.
