A question about the offside rule

Could an NRL rule expert help me with this scenario:

The opposition is attacking on the 20m line and puts through a grubber.

Dufty recovers on the 1m but is flat footed and he knows he will be bundled into the in-goal by the oncoming defenders.

So, he throws the ball hard backwards at the goalpost. The ball bounces, and sails forward above the heads of the oncoming defenders.

The ball lands in the hands of Widdop who races away to score a try.

Should the ref award the try or award a penalty for Widdop being offside?

It depends where Widdop was in relationship to Dufty when Dufty threw the ball. If he was behind Dufty then should be play on, if in front then he was off-side.

That's how I interpret the rule.

offside .. I have seen similar … years back the fullback went to gather a kick, burst through their hands into the post then bounced forward past the fullback into a teammate.

the offside rule is not about which way the ball is kicked, thrown, bounced, fumbled .. It is where the players are standing in relation to each other

However … if you want to get fancy … if you are in the in goal about to go over the dead ball line can you kick the ball to a bloke in front of you as long as they are still in goal?

The offside rule is easy to interpret
The team in possession must ensure that each player receiving the ball must be behind the feet of the preceding player who had the ball prior to him either passing or kicking.
If he is in front and receives the ball he is offside.

I would love to see that.

I can imagine Nighty attempting that play....and failing

I think Rufus had a comment about kicking to someone with both in goal?
