ADAM Reynolds and John Sutton are being urged to play themselves into NSW - Brett Ken

ADAM Reynolds and John Sutton are being urged to play themselves into NSW Origin jerseys — with Blues great Brett Kenny adamant the Souths pairing boast the “chemistry” to bring down Queensland.
Unthinkable at the start of the week, tattooed Rabbitohs Reynolds and Sutton are suddenly auditioning for a place in the Origin series opener when they face Melbourne at ANZ Stadium in Friday Night Football.
With the future of incumbent NSW No.7 Mitchell Pearce in doubt, Kenny urged Blues selectors to pick the Souths duo ahead of other halves contenders including James Maloney, Jarrod Mullen, Josh Reynolds and Trent Hodkinson.
Speaking with The Daily Telegraph, the Parramatta, NSW and Australia champion insisted the on-field bond between the Rabbitohs pairing was not only crucial for the Blues attack, but similar to that which he and fellow Parramatta great Peter Sterling brought to the state side back in the 1980.
“If NSW are going to leave Pearce out, and I think they should, then our halves have to be the boys from Souths,’’ says Kenny, who played 17 Origins in the sky blue.

  • “Adam Reynolds is definitely our next best seven, no question. And if you pick him, I think you have to go with Sutton too.
“The bloke has size, which will be an advantage, plus the chemistry those blokes share on the field will be invaluable.
“I know in my own career, having Sterlo with me in the halves was a huge bonus. Rather than spend the week working each other out, you already had the chemistry and just taught the rest of the backline how to play off you.
“That’s the advantage Queensland have had over us for years. Having so many players hold down the same position, year after year, series after series, for both Queensland and Australia.”
While Roosters playmaker Pearce, who made headlines this week following a boozy night in Kings Cross, will be free to play Origin, it is understood NSW coach Laurie Daley is seriously considering other options.
Enter Reynolds. While he might not be in the same form as this time last year, numbers provided by Fox Sport Statistics prove the gun Bunny still holds a slight edge when it comes to the figures that matter.
Making more metres, tackle breaks and linebreaks than Pearce in 2014, Reynolds also holds a significant edge when it comes to his short kicking game. Already this year the halfback has forced six drop outs, three times that of Pearce, and boasts two 40/20s, while his Roosters rival has one.
The only area in which Pearce is significantly ahead is linebreak assists, up 6-2.
If Pearce is left out, there is also some chance his halves partner at the Roosters, and fellow Blues incumbent James Maloney, will also be removed from five-eighth
“And I would leave Mitchell out,’’ Kenny continued. “It would seem that, because of the faith Laurie has shown in him, he thought it was OK to go have a few beers with Origin around the corner. That he was a shoo-in for the job regardless.
“And, look, I’m the first to say young footballers should be able to have a beer and enjoy themselves. But while Mitchell Pearce has performed at club level, he hasn’t made that step up in Origin.
“I know Laurie doesn’t want to throw rookies in, but maybe we have to give some of the younger halves a go. Select Adam Reynolds and say, right, you’ve now got the seven jersey for the series. Go for it.”

NSW haven't picked the best players avaible for the last 5 years or so. Why would htey start now.

Selectors have an obsession with club combinations, left side/right side only players, made for origin wank. Just pick the best 17 in each position FFS!

They're the halves pairing that Laurie Daley is thinking of throwing at Queensland on Wednesday week, but against Cooper Cronk and the Melbourne Storm on Friday night, Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire said John Sutton and Adam Reynolds came up well short.

"Just the precision of our play was probably the biggest thing," Maguire pointed out after his side's 27-14 loss at home.

"[When] you're comparing the Cronk kicking game - talking to Sutto there, we spoke about the precision of certain areas of our game - they were better than us."

The Storm forced six line drop outs in total, forcing the Rabbitohs into making over 50 more tackles. South Sydney failed to force any repeat sets for the entire game.

"When you're in a battle like that, when you know it's going to be a tough game, it's all about pressure," Maguire said.

"They were able to get back to back sets. And obviously those cross bombs, they land on the spot whereas ours didn't at times. We didn't give ourselves the chance to do what they were doing to us but when we did, and we hung onto the ball, we obviously made some metres down through the park and come up with a couple of tries there."

Captain John Sutton, who was 18th man for NSW last year but is in the frame for selection on Tuesday night, agreed.

"We just didn't build any pressure, like Madge said. And Melbourne Storm did that. Cooper Cronk's kicks were on the money, and my kicks and Adam's tonight were way off and didn't build any pressure and made it hard on ourselves."

With Greg Inglis, Ben Te'o and Chris McQueen also in line to be named by Queensland on Tuesday, the Rabbitohs could have up to five players away on Origin duty during next week's clash in Cronulla.

But Maguire was confident in the club's depth, and even hinted that hooker Issac Luke would be a chance to return.

"He might be a chance this week, I'm not sure. We've got to go through the tests, which we have been, and he's been ticking off on all those. But it's an injury that we're not going to rush if the doctors and performance team don't think it's right to go. But he's ticking all the right boxes at the moment," he said.

On the heavy toll of Origin, he said: "Every team's in the same predicament. We've got some pretty good players that are itching to have a game. Ben Lowe, Joel Reddy, Lote Tuqiri... so I've got a lot of players in the background who are working hard to get their opportunity. I'll make some decisions this week depending on who's in or out. But I'll make sure they're ready to go."
