‘Bring back Origin’

THE PNG Origin game should be reintroduced for PNG to select a better Kumuls side to prepare for the 2013 World Cup in England in October next year.
Current Kumuls coach Adrian Lam made this call when giving his opinion on how best to pick a team based on performance to prepare for next year’s the World Cup.
Lam said the PNG Origin match is made up of the cream of PNG based elite players known as the residents side who will go up against the overseas based players known as the international in the origin game where a final team will be selected to go into boot camp before heading off to the World Cup.
“The Origin match is the best concept introduced back in 2009 and should be reintroduced this year to help prepare our Kumuls team for the World Cup next year,” the former Queensland’s Maroons halfback who turned his back on Australia to play for his country of birth, said.
Lam said PNG can beat rugby league superpowers like New Zealand, Australia and England if proper attention was given to the game which includes strong junior development program and the national team having more international exposure.
“The way the league is going is truly on its knees and at the moment no one is making the right decisions to move forward and as a coach, we do not want to put ourselves in that position again like the previous years,” Lam said.
“As the saying goes, if you are always doing what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve done.”
Lam also warned that players from leagues not affiliated to the PNGRFL which is the mother body will not be qualified for selection not matter how good they are. He praised the PNGNRL bid team for a job well done in the junior development and keeping rugby league alive in the country.
“Without Brad Tassell and his hard working team, I don’t think such a high standard of profile rugby league players and competition would enter the country,” he said.
“And they have also done well for rugby league in general with their strong junior development program in the country, and I applaud them for a job well done.”

Do the PNGRFL have a website?

No, the PNGRFL has failed miserably at this. For a so called National Sport it Rugby League has been left behind by the likes of Soccer, Cricket, AFL whom already have their own websites.

However individual some indivual teams do have a website;
PNG NRL Bid team - www.pngnrlbid.com
Goroka Lahanis Digicel Cup Team -http://lahanispng.com

The problem is individuals have egos. The amount of RFL set-ups I've offered to make free websites for, and every time I hear the same thing back, they have somebody else doing, whether it's their brother or a "real" professional, and nothing ever gets done.

There is no reason for somebody to not have a website, if they want one. You have to wonder about the PNGRFL if they can't get a website off the ground.

Totally agree.

Plus there is the fact that they have been leaderless the last 3 years as they have gone back and forth through the courts to decide who is the legitimate President/Chairmen etc...

Anyway, back on topic;

I watched the first ever PNG Origin game just before the 2008 RLWC Kumuls Team was picked and I must say that it did help in picking a competitive PNG Team.

And in its second year 2009 it also guided the selectors in picking one of the best Kumul Teams every in recent memory for the Pacific Cup.

If a PNG Origin game were to take place this, which players would make the international team ?

Just off the top of my head this are probably some of the players that Adrian Lam would pick. James Segayaro is injured and is a noted omission. There is also a missing starting prop and another forward for the bench.

There might be more that qualify to play for PNG but this are the only ones I'm aware of at the moment.

1. David Mead (Titans, NRL)
2. Ryan Tongia (Ipswich Jets, QLD Cup)
3. Menzie Yere (Sheffield Eagles, UK)
4. Jesse Joe Parker (Whitehaven, UK)
5. Elijah Haro Jnr
6. Joe Bond (Redcliff, QLD Cup)
7. Ray Thompson (Cowboys, NRL)
8.
9. Paul Aiton (Wakefield, UK)
11. Tyson Martin (Cutters, QLD Cup)
12. Jason Chan (Huddersfield, UK)
13. Rod Griffin , (Twead Heads, QLD Cup)

14. Tommy Butterfield (Redcliff, QLD Cup)
15. Ryse Martin (Roosters NYC)
16. Jack Cooper (Cowboys NYC)
17.

Put Jay Aston at 17, impact off the bench.
Where is James Nightingale playing these days? Perhaps put him up front, or put Rod Griffin up front, and Nightingale in the backrow.

just had a quick look on pngscape website and they've listed:
Jack Kelleher (Cowboys NYC - 2Row/Lock)
Clifford Beetham (Cowboys NYC - Half/Hooker)
Kurt Baptiste (Broncos - Hooker)

The thing that I always notice is just how small most of the PNG players are. Very unusual to find big old prop forwards. It's noticeable in the way they tend to play and must surely be a hurdle to them ever competing with the big three?

You'll have to wait for a generation of stable governnebt for that.

One of my most precious moments here in Perth was being invited to a BBQ with some PNG'ers. I was the only white guy, and I just finished my degree.

I was the least educated person in the room, everyone else had post-graduate awards.

Two of them were in medical related fields, one thing they pointed to was Fijians, as they are both Melanesians. They mentioned the Fijians also used to be small until relative prosperity increased their nutrition levels.

They had faith PNG'ers would get bigger with better nutrition levels.

Totally forgot that Makaili Aizue is still playing somewhere in the UK and I guess Costigen would be available since he is not playing Origin this year.

Trevor Exton was the other player that escaped my mind.

But I would be interested to find out how Kurt Baptise qualifies for PNG.
