Hopefully some of you computer smarts people can help me, im being driven up the wall by different people on the phone telling me different things in hard to understand languages.

Problem: Trying to get ADSL2 but am on telstra pair gains system. TPG (and others) tell me I cant get ADSL2 cause of this.

Ring telstra, they say thats right, exchange has ADSL2 but im on PGS.

I ask TPG to do a transposition for me and they say they will but then tell me my phone line even if I remove the pair gains is only compatible with ADSL1.......I dont get it? Is it PGS or what, nobody can answer me the question as to WTF do I have to do to get ADSL2!!!

If PGS is the problem, why then can I not get ADSL2 if I remove the PGS when my exchange is ready for it????

Im going insane, been chasing my tail for weeks and need someone to tell me in plain english what I need to do.

Depends where you live. ADSL2+ is only available in metro areas at the moment and fringe areas of regionals like the Central Coast. It's being rolled out... slowly but surely.

Enter your phone number in there. It'll let you know what exchange you're on, and whether it has in fact been enabled for ADSL2+, and by which companies. For example, I'm in Newcastle which is largely only on ADSL, but a couple of exchanges (including mine) have been enabled for ADSL2+ by Optus.

This exchange has been enabled for ADSL service.

Please note that while the exchange supports ADSL, this is no guarantee that your physical phone line is up to scratch. A conclusive test can only be done upon registering for a service.

Ok The bold part is im guessing where the problem lies.......is my physical phone line the part that goes from my house out to the street or from the street to the exchange????

What are my options for this, is it my responsibility if my phone line is crap or is it telstras? I thought ADSL2 used a dedicated copper wire or something, meaning would they have to put a new one in anyway??

Can I get a new line?

btw thanks for your help, I do appreciate it as going from TPG to telstra back and fourth on the phone with no answers, f**king stupid machines talking to me and being on hold has left me ready to throw something out the window.....

Well yeah, that's the whole thing with pair gain. It's been made to accommodate multiple phone services over the one line, whereas ADSL services require a dedicated copper line. Not sure how you'd get this fixed though

Just an update, iinet have told me that I need to get telstra to give me an ADSL2 line and then I can apply for ADSL2.

So I rang telstra again and they told me that I cannot get the line until I place an order.

If only telstra were not such a crazy rip off, I could afford to apply through them and maybe they would do it but at $60 minimum for 600mb (lol what a joke) for at least 12 months I cant really pay that for no real internet.

How come they are so bad price wise to the competition? Who would use them?? $90 gets me 12 gig hahaa, $50 with TPG give me 30 odd gig.

My new ADSL2 modem from TPG just arrived about 10 minutes ago actually, gonna tell Telstra to stick their 25 gig cable for $120 a month up their arse, moving onto $60 a month for 50 gig.

Only problem is I don't actually have a phone line in my room (ADSL2+ or otherwise), do Telstra put these in and if so, how much and how long (approximately) will it take?

Me? About 6 - 7 metres away (very rough guess), I really need a line in my room but not sure of the cost or how long it takes.

Do you want a new line or just a new outlet?

Either way they should be able to do it within a week at the most but obviously a new line would be more costly, paying for the rental and all.

Simo, it might be easier if you just move house!

Does a new outlet have the same effect? Just don't want to harm the performance of the internet.
New outlet is easy as to do - you can do it yourself! Won't harm net performance at all.

Another option would be to go wireless. Around ~$120 can get you a wireless kit with a router and usb adaptor. Plug the router in to the modem where the phone line is, plug the usb adaptor into your computer, and voila!

lol I think you may be right.....but knowing my luck atm the same sh*t would happen! Maybe I just retire from the dream of the net at home for now and revisit the subject in a year.

One more question, will a new outlet definitely be ADSL2+ compatible or is it the line itself that determines compatibility? And if it's the line, how would I find out whether or not the line is compatible?

The line to your house itself is made compatible, and hence any outlets inside your place are then compatible, whether they are added later or not.

Visit that link I posted earlier in the thread to find out if you can get ADSL2
