Recent NTNews story about the Livingstone Jets
A group of Northern Territory mums have taken on the task of operating the newest NRL NT club, the Livingstone Jets, which aims to become a centre for hopeful juniors in the growing region.
The club, based at the Livingstone Recreation Reserve, will take part in the upcoming 2026 season allowing better access to the code for players in Batchelor, Dundee, Acacia Hills and Adelaide River.
Mother of two Jessica Argent, the club’s first president, said they were currently on track to field six mixed junior teams in their debut year, though there was interest in all-girls squads.
“This club is super important for us, because there are so many kids in Dundee, Darwin River or Batchelor that just don’t have a club close enough,” she said.
“We know parents have to drive in pretty far already so to have this club based in the rural area will make that easier and will allow more kids to come in.”
The volunteer firefighter has embraced the presidency role at the club and is eager to see it succeed as more people move into the surrounding area.
She’s joined by fellow mothers Chloe Hardy (Secretary), Georgie Weppner (Registrar) and Casey Hanekom (Public Officer), who despite never meeting before have formed a fast bond.
“I’ve never been in this kind of role before but having the three other mums beside me with the understanding of what we already do day to day has helped build our bond,” Argent said.
“Mums are just generally good at juggling things between us and generally when it comes to things like handing out water bottles and washing uniforms are the backbone of any club.
“A club needs a president so I threw my hat in the ring and that willingness landed me the role, I’m learning as I go but having boys I’m keen for the challenge.
“Between the four of us we’re all just riding this wave of passion for all our little bush kids to be outdoors and run amok.”
There’s been plenty of interest with the club now having officially taken on the Jets moniker and a logo with the colour maroon chosen to symbolise their kids having fun and getting dirty.
“Having the groundwork and foundation already there at Livingstone makes perfect sense for us, we’ve got a fully equipped field and club house, it’s got that community feel already,” Argent said.
NRL NT general manager Tony Crowe said the club would operate with the support to ensure strong governance, compliance and operational foundations while building sustainable pathways for those involved.
“The Jets are founded on a clear vision: to deliver a safe, inclusive and family-friendly sporting environment that makes Rugby League accessible close to home,” he said.
“Initial programs will focus on modified junior formats, providing age-appropriate experiences that prioritise fun, learning and connection.”
