New clubs in Northern Territory
NRL NT has proactively taken steps to help establish two new Tackle and Touch football clubs in the NT for 2026. The first is in Livingstone, which is located just outside of Darwin and will take part in the main Metro competition which features Litchfield Bears, Darwin Brothers, Palmerston Raiders, Nightcliff Dragons, Northern Sharks and South Darwin Rabbitohs.

The Livingstone club is set to be called either the Spitfires and Jets.

The other new club being formed will be in Tennant Creek, reviving Rugby League in an area which hasn't played since 2016.

WA Men's Premiership expands
The NRL WA Men's Premiership will expand from six to 10 teams in 2026, with the Ellenbrook Rabbitohs, Kwinana Titans, Alkimos Tigers and Kalamundra Bulldogs set to enter a first division team.

Last year, the clubs involved in the main competition were the Rockingham Sharks, Fremantle Roosters, South Perth Lions, Willagee Bears, North Beach Sea Eagles and Joondalup Giants.

I would expect there to be some pretty heavy scores for the 4 new clubs in WA but I think it is great they are all coming in together as they should have enough games of a competitive standard against each other to hopefully raise to the standard of the established 6 within a couple of years.

Agree. Even between the returning six, South Perth & North Beach put on some massive scores last year (eg. Lions defeated Joondalup 72-0 in one game), so almost guaranteed the newcomers will run up some big losses.

Having a bit more diversity in the competition will be good overall. Six teams playing 16 rounds plus finals felt very repetitive.

Recent NTNews story about the Livingstone Jets

A group of Northern Territory mums have taken on the task of operating the newest NRL NT club, the Livingstone Jets, which aims to become a centre for hopeful juniors in the growing region.

The club, based at the Livingstone Recreation Reserve, will take part in the upcoming 2026 season allowing better access to the code for players in Batchelor, Dundee, Acacia Hills and Adelaide River.

Mother of two Jessica Argent, the club’s first president, said they were currently on track to field six mixed junior teams in their debut year, though there was interest in all-girls squads.

“This club is super important for us, because there are so many kids in Dundee, Darwin River or Batchelor that just don’t have a club close enough,” she said.

“We know parents have to drive in pretty far already so to have this club based in the rural area will make that easier and will allow more kids to come in.”

The volunteer firefighter has embraced the presidency role at the club and is eager to see it succeed as more people move into the surrounding area.

She’s joined by fellow mothers Chloe Hardy (Secretary), Georgie Weppner (Registrar) and Casey Hanekom (Public Officer), who despite never meeting before have formed a fast bond.

“I’ve never been in this kind of role before but having the three other mums beside me with the understanding of what we already do day to day has helped build our bond,” Argent said.

“Mums are just generally good at juggling things between us and generally when it comes to things like handing out water bottles and washing uniforms are the backbone of any club.

“A club needs a president so I threw my hat in the ring and that willingness landed me the role, I’m learning as I go but having boys I’m keen for the challenge.

“Between the four of us we’re all just riding this wave of passion for all our little bush kids to be outdoors and run amok.”

There’s been plenty of interest with the club now having officially taken on the Jets moniker and a logo with the colour maroon chosen to symbolise their kids having fun and getting dirty.

“Having the groundwork and foundation already there at Livingstone makes perfect sense for us, we’ve got a fully equipped field and club house, it’s got that community feel already,” Argent said.

NRL NT general manager Tony Crowe said the club would operate with the support to ensure strong governance, compliance and operational foundations while building sustainable pathways for those involved.

“The Jets are founded on a clear vision: to deliver a safe, inclusive and family-friendly sporting environment that makes Rugby League accessible close to home,” he said.

“Initial programs will focus on modified junior formats, providing age-appropriate experiences that prioritise fun, learning and connection.”

Blooming Territory rugby league star Brandon Norris got his first sniff at life as an NRL player in a losing campaign for New Zealand Warriors against Manly in round two of the Witzer Pre-Season Challenge.
The 20-year-old backline sensation was called into the Wahs squad as a reserve and got his first chance to make an impression for a large part of the 33-18 defeat at McLean Park.
Norris is expected to play another season in the NSWRL’s Jersey Flegg Cup under-21 competition alongside pushing for appearances in the NSW Cup.
While it wasn’t the home-run debut he would’ve hoped for, it was a good learning experience for the youngster who will knock on the door for an official NRL debut this season.
After spending a good portion of his youth career with Northern Sharks in the NRLNT under-18 competition and having a breakout first grade campaign in 2022, Norris received interest from multiple NRL suitors.

NRL NT has released their club participation figures for 2025, with total participation growing 3% YoY.

This excludes schools, tag & touch. Would expect numbers to grow again in 2026 with Livingstone adding multiple new junior clubs to Darwin JRL and focused programs in the Barkly region.
