AFL 2004 - Round 11

Damn Iprimus was down last night so I was unable to get on to do something more extensive, not that it matters as rounds don't get more straightforward than this...

Collingwood(17) v West Coast (Friday night - Telstra Dome)
Hawthorn v Essendon (57) (Saturday - MCG)
Adelaide (80) v Carlton (Saturday - AAMI Stadium, Adelaide)
Brisbane (12) v Port Adelaide (Saturday night - Gabba)
Kangaroos( 20) v Richmond (Saturday night - Telstra Dome)
Sydney v St. Kilda (42) (Sunday - SCG)
Western Bulldogs v Geelong (30) (Sunday - Telstra Dome)
Fremantle (50) v Melbourne (Sunday - Subiaco Oval, Perth)

Admittedly, Essendon & Adelaide are the only dead-set certainties for the round, but all of my other tips here will be difficult to roll. Port has shown the capacity to surprise at the Gabba before, but hasn't appeared as strong away from Adelaide as it has been in recent seasons. Richmond could cause the upset were Richo to catch fire, and such a result would be the least surprising turn-up. The Bulldogs/Cats game could be a real cracker, but the felines have an edge in class and poise. hawthorn hasn't beaten Essendon since 1997, and its difficult to see how they could possibly hope to beat them again prior to 2007. Sydney should provide the Saints with a contest, but the Saints appear to be an irresistable force right now. Expect Collingwood to make it three straight, although they're kidding themselves if they think they can be a genuine player again this season. melbourne would fancy themselves against a Jeckyl & Hyde Freo, but the Dockers tend to be a radically different proposition when playing at Subi, and should have to much in reserve.

Haha,

Kevvie, you tosser! Declaring this weeks games a straightforward gimme, only for everyone else to plum for the Tigers

I was interested to see the Tigers debuting a famous footballing name for this game - Kelvin Moore.

The way Hawthorn is travelling right now it would not have overtly surprised me to see THE Kelvin Moore pulling on the boots for a belated game number 302...

I can't believe my eyes! www.thescore.com.au has Swans beating the Saints 112 to 76!

My tips:

Magpies v Eagles
Crows v Blues
Hawks v Bombers
Kangaroos v Tigers
Lions v Power
Bulldogs v Cats
Swans v Saints
Dockers v Demons

that was the final score...Swans deserved to win, outplayed the saints in every department. Maybe now Grant Thomas will be forced to make the saints train once every blue moon?

they should win next week against the Dogs, but other teams like the Dons, Lions, Power, Dees etc. would be eyeing off their number 1 spot as within reach now.

5/8 - not a bad result, considering the 'upset' wins of Carlton and Melbourne (although the only reason the Melbourne win would be deemed an upset was cause it was played at Fort Subi) and Richmond let me down majorly again....reasonable round to hold the lead in my local pubs footy tipping comp

Hmmm...

Great win to the Swans, who seemed to unsettle the Saints with their normally dubious short, over possession game.

The nonsense talk about a St Kilda unbeaten season can now end (it was never on, and an unbeaten season would only damage a club for the following season anyway), but I suspect that the Saints will be the better for the loss and will hang-on to top spot.

Surely the highlight of that match was the Riewoldt mark. Sensational skill and bravery and it is little wonder that the young Saint is the most prized footballer in the competition.

Predictably, Essendon creamed Hawthorn on the scoreboard, but the final margin flattered the Bombers and obscured some future concerns facing the club. When you dominate overall possession as they did, it should be a worry to allow the opposition more ball inside attacking fifty. The Hawk forward set-up is one of the poorest I've seen (deserving of 16th rung in the comp) and one could only wonder as to how much damage the Saints or Lions could have created with a similar amount of inside 50 ball.

Great win for Carlton, but it is also a win that will probably only paper over the cracks of their many pressing deficiencies. Carlton vs Hawthorn should be an interesting game this week and could well decide the wooden spoon.

Not much to warrant speaking about elsewhere, but West Coast have obvious problems, which is to say nothing of the Tigers. Frawley is now a certainty to be dumped at season's end (if not before) and it will indeed be interesting to see who gets the nod as his replacement. The smart money is on Plough Wallace, and he would be my favourite for the spot at the moment.

I know for a fact Richmond have offered a former player a 5 year contract.

Let's hope he re signs with his current scum club and doesn't end up at Richmond.........

I take it, Craig, that you're not buying Essendon's desperate media saturation push for sainthood?

I loathe Sheedy, although he may have the clout necessary to force through the big changes at Richmond.

I say 'may' here, because the big unknown about Sheedy is his capacity to coach outside of his comfort zone. Unlike others such as Matthews, Pagan, Parkin, Jeans, Barassi, Hafey, etc he has always seemed to lack the stomach for risk and new challenges. Essentially he has settled into Essendon like a comfy old armchair, blamed anyone & everyone else when things have been going poorly, cunningly outmanouvred opponents politically to hang-on to his job, and exploited genuine offers from other clubs as a means of upping his salary with the Bombers.

He is clearly obsessed with becoming the longest serving coach at the club and I can't see him leaving anytime soon.

Beware the Blues off a 100 point loss. Twice this year winning after 100 point losses. I set the goal of 7-8 wins for the Blues this year and the look on target for it. They do lack in certain areas and are missing French in the ruck. Hopefully Dennis Pagan has got it through his head that Fevola is a FULL FORWARD and not a centre half back or fullback. They need more from Nick Stevens and Lance Whitnall but it is a young side and it will take another 4-5 years I reckon before finals footy is even considered at Princes Park. But at least we are now moving forward.

PS: MUST beat Hawthorn tonight and follow up last weeks good result.

When did I say I was talking about Sheedy ;-)

I hope personally that he does use our offer to increase the length of his contract at the Scummers. That is the only reason he hasn't re signed with them yet.

To be frank he is a useless twat, as much as I admire him for his ability and willingness to promote the game, simple fact is he should have won at least 4 more premierships than he has at Essendon and the fact that they have only won two premierships since 1990 is a disgrace given the talent and resources that have been there and how could you respect the record of the only man to coach a losing team in a Grand Final against Collingwood in 45 years.

Wallace is the man and they need to offer whatever it takes to get him.
