Don't expect this to be the closest and most fab fought round of the season...
The tightest match should involve the opener, with Essendon fancying its chances of getting another win up against the Eagles. Both of these sides are ordinary, but Essendon impressed more in smashing Richmond with an inspired second half last week, than West Coast did in struggling to over come a dismal Hawk outfit. Its a must win match for both sides, and normally I'd run with the red & blacks who have a superb recent record against the Perth-siders. I'll swing this week, however, as the loss of Hird and Lucas almost guarantees that Essendon will come a cropper.[
St Kilda are really struggling at the moment, and won't find the going easy on Saturday. They couldn't have picked a better time to come-up against a dismal Tiger side, however, and will surely get back on the winners list. Richmond turned in a strong first half last week, but followed-up with a truly embarrassing second half. I expect this game to proceed along similar lines, although St Kilda are not nearly in the sort of form required to carve the Tigers up too savagely.
The Roos and the Blues played out a ripper of a match earlier in the season, with the former team pinching the game with the last kick of the day. Carlton are gradually improving, but remain well short of the mark, although the return of Fevola gives them a huge boost. The Kangaroos don't excite me much, but in a competition that is awash with mediocrity, they're worthy of a lower eight spot and should use superior skill and pace to edge themselves a win closer to September action.
Brisbane will officially end Collingwood's purely mathematical finals hopes with a comfortable win at the Gabba. The Lions have looked more solid than spectacular in recent weeks, but with the Saints fall from grace, remain the team to beat for this year's flag. They simply have too many big name match winners for a Collingwood outfit that relies on having all hands on deck, and dragging every ounce of effort and ability out of every player.
I haven't hid my admiration for Geelong throughout this season, and I'm not about to start here. It should be reasonably tight all day, with Sydney (as usual) crossing their fingers & toes that Barry Hall will come-up with the goods when it matters most. Geelong is well equipped to cope with most sides, particularly as it lacks an overt dependency on any key player. If they hadn't have been upset by West Coast a fortnight ago, I probably would have ran with the Swans here. Geelong is the better side though, and with the pain of that defeat still fresh, it should be able to expose the Swans short, over-finessing game plan.
Fremantle are looking for all the world like a side destined for the much unwanted 9th position on the table. The Dockers have talent, but they also have an unerring capacity to screw-up and should struggle to beat a revived Crows outfit at AAMI Stadium. A spurt of Hall magic effectively sunk the Crows early last week, but they played stoically over the last three quarters. A committed 3 quarter showing is all thats needed to put the Dockers away these days...
Hawthorn? Help me Rhonda, I'm fast running short on ways to describe this side's all too apparent deficiencies and failings! Port always beats Hawthorn and 9 times in 10 they beat them with an almost agonising ease. Suffice to say, this will not be that 1 occasion in 10 sort of match!
Melbourne? Yawn! Talk about over-achieving, but it is possible that the Demons may well over-achieve their way (Collingwood style) to a Grand Final thrashing. One thing's for sure, they have little to fear from a Bulldog side that has hit the inevitable wall and will struggle to win again this season! No, Cupid, Hawthorn doesn't really count these days
