Essendon vs Collingwood (16)

Geelong (27) vs Fremantle

Hawthorn vs Brisbane Lions (56)

Melbourne (20) vs Sydney Swans

Western Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide (69)

Adelaide (33) vs Richmond

Kangaroos vs St Kilda (22)

West Coast Eagles (44) vs Carlton

Geelong, Brisbane, Melbourne, Port and the Eagles will guarantee a return of at least 5 this weekend, with the Saints highly likely to bring the Kangaroos back to reality, and Richmond not expected to seriously trouble Adelaide at home. Collingwood and Essendon could go either way, but with the Bombers bringing in a raft of ordinary youngsters for this match, I'd expect Collingwood to prove too solid.

came back to bite you on the arse big time didnt it!

Essendon's youngsters aren't as ordinary as you think...the great majority of them have stood up to the challenge with class players like Hird, Lucas and Fletcher missing more games that i'd like them too. Players like Lovett-Murray, Dyson, Watson (VERY underrated IMHO)

and lets not forget that McPhee is still only 21!

and one player id like to see eventually get a run is Adrian Wilson - cousin of Michael O'Loughlin, overlooked by all but Essendon, hopefully will prove decisive for us in years to come.

They beat a team on Friday night that struggled to a 5 point victory over Richmond. With the exception of the game against Port Adelaide, Essendon have been highly unimpressive this year. Will do nothing come September and are at least 5 years away from another premiership.

St Kilda, Geelong and possibly Melbourne have already jumped you.

Not at all.

I've maintained for some time that Essendon's much vaunted youngsters are (as a job lot) the most ordinary in the league and season 2004 has clearly borne this out.

A cursory glance at across the season statistics finds the Essendon youngsters (with the exception of ex-Freo boy McPhee) struggling at the foot of the club figures, with the side being kept (just) in finals contention bu its core group of experienced senior players.

Hird and Fletcher have both missed 5 games for the season and Lucas 4 (hardly a horror run) and the youngsters haven't stood-up brilliantly, with all bar Lovett-Murray & McPhee being irregularly elevated, performing poorly, then getting dumped back to the VFL toot-sweet.

Even Lovett-Murray has only averaged 8 possessions and 3 marks a game across his 17 matches! He looks for all the world like a Leon Davis without the occasional mercurial turn, and yet the other Bomber kids trail in his awe-inspiring wake.

You'd make a fab propaganda spruiker for Sheeds, that's for sure!
