Nobody would have predicted it when the draw was announced, but the Geelong vs Melbourne clash is the match of the round. The Demons are surely the greatest pretender in the history of the game and one wonders how long they can keep their good form rolling. Geelong rarely attracts support from the punters, but for mine the side is developing a rock solid look about it, and will be hard to toss for the remainder of the season. They'll be too good here, particularly if the conditions are a bit on the ordinary side. On a side note, its great to see big Steven King back to lead the purrers, aclass player who has endured shocking injury woes in recent times. Lets hope the worst of the rot is behind him.
Almost equally surprising, is the reality that the Tigers vs Hounds clash runs a close second to the above clash in the attraction stakes. The Bulldogs have performed above expectations thus far, but one wonders how much longer their young and lean bodies can stand-up to the rigours of a gruelling AFL season. It could go either way, but Richmond impressed last week and should take enough form and confidence from that win to get over the line here.
It should also be further pain for the Sydney faithful this round, with the side unlikely to get over West Coast in Perth. The Eagles are a lesser side than the Swans, but they really need to win here to keep their finals hopes alive and should find an extra gear at home. The signs have been worrying for the Swans recently, and huge question marks now sit over the overall quality of the side and the choice of tactics employed by Roos. Another couple of losses and all hell will break loose in the Harbor City.
It already has at Hawthorn, but this hasn't helped them on the paddock, and it is almost impossible to see them getting over a rebounding Fremantle side in Tasmania. The Dockers got something of a wake-up call against the Saints last week, but are still a mile better than Hawthorn in every facet of the game and should win comfortably. Hard to find positives out at Glenferrie right now, but its a big welcome back to the very promising Rick Ladson who has been savaged by a broken leg and a knee injury, but is hopefully about to get a better run from fickle fate.
While I'm still not enamored of the Bombers who have mixed an easy draw with a full list and a lot of luck to get to the inflated ladder position at which they reside, they should still roll the Crows. An Adelaide win would be the least surprising result of the round, but gut feeling tells me that the Bombers are going to get 6 straight.
Not a lot else to get excited about this round, but I certainly wouldn't be putting good money on Collingwood turning things around.
