AFL 2005 - Round 14

A bit slow getting the discussion thread for the round up, but I've no doubt there'll be quite a few hot topics of discussion for this round.

Principal among them already:

  • The Essendon performance last night against the Kangaroos. Hmmm, somehow I'm betting that Fatprick Smith won't be addressing the Bombers in his articles with the same overt stringency with which he routinely attacked Hawthorn last season... Call it a hunch.
  • The Brisbane smack-up of Melbourne, which has now firmly put the entire football world on notice that the brutes are back in town, bigtime!
  • Port's stunningly tepid performance against Collingwood.
  • Sydney's inability to reign in Richmond with a fabulously gallant final quarter charge.
  • Richmond's ability to exploit Swan flaws beautifully in the opening half, before hanging on grimly for a crucial win.
  • West Coast's stunning second half, which promptly turned a 2 goal halftime deficite into a 13 goal win!
Discuss...

I remember Ray Hall getting 2 weeks for a little slap on Cam (?) Cloke earlier this year... so i'll be reeeeeallly pissed off if Gehrig doesnt get 2 for what he did today. I know that "tap" earlier in the season shouldnt of been anything, but that should have NO bearing on the result of this hearing...

Gehrig two weeks...

Guerra (think it was him) had he's elbow up when he knocked the doggie out.. so again he SHOULD get a few weeks..

But my tip after saying all that...

They'll both get off

Oh God, 8 more rounds to go before I'm out of my misery for 2005!

Abysmal showing by Hawthorn who achieved little more than playing Geelong back into some badly needed form! Kudos to Angelo Lekkas, at least, who played well in his return match from the stroke he suffered earlier in the season.

Nice win to St Kilda who were clearly inconvenienced by the loss of Harvey & Reiwoldt to injuries early in the match, but still ensured their finals hopes remain alive.

A good fight back to Freo, who just failed to keep Adelaide out of second, a position that the Crows will more than readily solidify next week, given that they're fortunate to have drawn the Hawks.

Brisbane have now slipped back into the eight and loom omenously a mere two matches out of the four with a good run ahead.

West Coast is the only side assured of finals action, with the club finding itself an astonishing 4 games and percentage clear of the field with a mere 8 games remaining. Might as well engrave the club's name on the minor premiership trophy tomorrow.

The Bulldogs remain just in touch of finals action, but the season is effectively over for Fremantle, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton.

Special praise should go out to Jason Akermanis who played yet another blinder, and must surely have rocketed into serious calculations for a second Brownlow medal. Aker is the best player in the comp right now and is in very special form.

I have been a huge, huge critic of Lekkas in the past, you know that Kev. I've always thought on the park he has been a marshmellow ...

However, credit where credit is due. For this bloke to have had a stroke only months ago and to be back in the Seniors already.... That is a tough, tough effort. Well done to the bloke.

Same old Richmond.

How they nearly blew a 45 point lead is beyond me.

Onto the scum next week  .... Dear god let Richmond give them a hiding ...

Knowing Richmond, we'll probably lose........

Its more a case of which Hawthorn player you haven't been a huge, huge critic of! :p

Well said, though...

Yep, you'll really need to win games like this.

Still, St Kilda & Port are the only sides outside the eight presently who can squeeze in and the former will face a tougher run (once they smack Carlton next week) and a burgeoning injury toll.

Providing Richo stays on his feet, and he's having a great year injury wise, then the Tigers still should be able to sneak over the line.

I was quite taken by young Thursfield on the weekend. Has done brilliantly to go from Coburg reserves to Richmond seniors in the space of a month. Will need a lot of bulk to play KPP (as desired), but looks to be well worth pursuing. Reminds me a bit of Thurgood, but that may just be because they're both on the light side.

With Gherig, Hammil and Riewoldt all out for an extended period, St Kilda are going to struggle to make it.

He's been playing on a bodgy knee since the St Kilda game lol

& has still been trying his guts out.

I fear for the day he retires. Richo is Richmond.

Only thing that annoys me about Staff is Ball hit him to, concedes the free kick ... Yet has no case to answer? Ball should clearly have been up on a striking charge.

Staff deserved a week.
