Votes are awarded by judges on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five being their top choice.

If pushed, I would suggest the following finishing order.

5 - Danyl Pearce
4 - Andrew Raines
3 - Grant Birchall
2 - Dale Thomas
1 - Marc Murphy

That said, I certainly expect Heath Shaw, Clint Bartram and Matt Rosa to have their admirers.

I'd be surprised if Pearce & Raines didn't quinella it, in either order.

I actually agree Kev on your top 3

I think young Andrew could consider himself unlucky, but Pearce certainly played well in the games I watched late in the season.

Murphy may still win it, but would have been a certainty if he hadn't been injured.

Pearce won the award and well done to the kid but geez ... How does a bloke who spends his entire playing time earning soft, unaccountable possesions earn the secondary votes from 3 of the judges.

Those who had Heath Shaw in 2nd ahead of Raines are a joke.

Fair enough. Pearce deserves it. I had him just ahead of Raines. Still would have been VERY tempted to pick Murphy anyway as the Rising Stars have been far and far between this year.

Didn't notice this waste of spacers votes.

Clearly trying to make up for last years attempt at cheating (Delid 5, Griffen 1 lol)

He's a strange one, is KB.

Similarly, it must have taken all the constraint that Mainwaring could muster to have left Rosa & Le Cras out of his votes! :p

Pearce was a good get for Port via the rookie list.

Hard to believe that every club in the comp passed him over, but it does happen occasionally.

Davey is the more impressive one. In all honesty, with the way the Interstate sides use their rookie lists, I expect them to pick up such players as Pearce for Port, Cox for West Coast etc.

Melbourne sides generally don't take advantage of this facility (For whatever reason) and Melbourne snaring Davey is a stroke of genius.

meltiger how could you say heath shaw gets easy touches and shouldnt have even got a vote?

he is just as courageous as raines if not more courageous and is a much better user of the ball, the fact that he has been a key part of a finals team where in the last 4 weeks of the season he was tagged speaks volumes about him

im guessing your a richmond supporter so happy 9th!

I said he shouldn't have been rated higher than Raines.

When given the task of stopping an opponent, Shaw has been found wanting. When given a Patrick Bowden, loose man, run the ball out type role he has looked fantastic.

& the fact they are in the finals backs up my suggestion. Shaw has looked good picking up soft possession in a team with a backline that has been winning games. Young Andrew has starred for a team without a backline whatsoever that has struggled all season.

--------------------------------------------

Raines should have been given 4 votes from all judges purely and simply for his hit on Didak in the centre of the MCG.

Raines takes possesion at pace, drops the shoulder, absoloutely cleans Didak up and at the end of it ... Maintains possession. All in one motion. Purely poetic stuff. Richmond footy, the way it should be played.

The video of the play should be shown to every kid that walks through the door at Punt Road with the instruction - "Son, when we play play the filth... this is what you do when you see that scum black and white guernsey in front of you... SMASH the bastards"

---------------------------------------

With regards to Richmond finishing 9th. Our record against the top 8 sides is no worse than yours. If Richmond had the favouritism of the AFL in being able to pick it's own draw like the filth do, we would have made the finals too.

Based on Richmond's results and Collingwood's draw we would have ended up with - 13 wins. Enough to put us in the finals.

We ALL saw how much better than Richmond the scum are back on the 2nd of July.

How many goals did you mongrels have on the board at halftime? 1 I think it was...

There are probably three reasons for this:

1) the non-VIC clubs (West Coast in particular) have larger budgets to devote to recruitment and are usually more switched-on to good roughy options as a consequence.

2) Related to point 1, clubs generally have a stronger sense of the broader playing talent that resides in their own backyard. With the WA & SA clubs covering a fairly broad talent base, but VIC recruiters operating under resource limitations, its hardly surprising that good roughy options slip past the VIC recruiter's notice. In VIC, where the playing talent is more vast, there are also a good many more recruiters overseeing the landscape so less can slip through.

3) VIC clubs will often be getting the bulk of the top end young talent through the main draft and are more likely to use the rookie list to get peripheral types with a little bit more experience, knowing that they may need to call on them in an injury crisis. The non-VIC clubs, on the whole, have less depth concerns and can afford to be more specualtive with raw youngsters on their rookie lists.
