Im worried about Shannon Hurn, already an AFL made body with people saying he doesnt have much more upside left.

Would love the hawks to get Ryder and Kennedy.

Hurn will either go number #2 with Collingwood or #4 with Carlton.

Kpp's are more valuable(if they work out) than midfielders.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the negative comments being aired around Hurn, Smarters.

To me, much of it sounds suspiciously like Big Footy crapola.

Every year we get a youngster(s) that finds himself (themselves) on the wrong side of a misguided Chinese whispers campaign, and this year Shannon Hurn & Mitchell Clark are those players.

The reality is that he has had a fab junior career, at both football and cricket; did well enough at the national carnival to earn AA selection; and has played senior football for Centrals in the SANFL with distinction.

He'll almost certainly be a good get for whoever picks him up (most likely Carlton).

Im still trying to figure out what the hawks will get with pick 3, it will be either Ryder or Kennedy.

Seeing we pick Ryder at 3, will Kennedy last at 6?

As I understand it, you have to be aged at least 17 years & 6 months old at the time of the draft.

Brett Deledio was the youngest player taken last season and only scraped in by a month.

Josh Fraser (from memory) had to wait an extra year to be drafted, having just fallen on the wrong side of this cut off point in 1998.

Will Hawthorn take KPP's this year with their high picks though?

After taking 2 last year, maybe they might concentrate on outside midfielders with 3 & 6, looking for KPP in the next 3 selections?

They may consider Hurn @ 3 (assuming Collingwood doesn't take him @ 2), but I believe they're very keen on Kennedy.

They need another 2 KPP and I suspect they fancy their chances of getting a couple of capable outside mid types from outside the top ten, but lack the confidence of getting good KPP prospects with lower picks.

Maybe if next years draft is as deep as they say, that would be the time to go the outside types. Shore up KPP this year.

Will be interesting, with the trades of recent years, they really need these young KPP's to come through.

All personal sh*t aside between ourselves, I'm not sold on the St Kilda model.

The last 5 premierships have been won by teams who did not bottom out.

From what I hear of the 2006 draft its shaping as stronger at the top end, but won't necessarily run the talent deeper.

I guess we'll find out in November 2006, but given that I'm not planning on Hawthorn having high picks in 2006, I'm happier to focus on the present.

Yes.

Yes, but :

a) Brisbane were benefitting from AFL support when building their side in the 90s, then they also got handy top-up players through the Fitzroy "merger", and then were blessed with what I refer to as the "two champion legup" courtesy of extra cap payments. They also had a sensational home ground advantage.

b) Port Adelaide constructed its strong side around players gleaned from the 'Murder Rule'. In essence, they got several years worth of high + priority picks in one go. It sickens me to the stomach that Port tragics will freely wank on and claim the SANFL club's heritage & premierships, when the club wasn't willing to enter the AFL on the back of the SANFL club's players!

c) Sydney are indeed, the top-up Kings, but no side in VFL/AFL history needed more good fortune to nail the flag, and everything went their way. Good luck to them after 72 years, but you sure as hell can't rely on that approach.

I've seen you spouting this view on bigfooty lol

Honestly mate, they won most of those premierships when the SANFL was a legitimate competition - ie: Before the Crows.

If say Redclife were to join the NRL, they should be allowed to look back on their history in the QLD Cup with pride, but shouldn't be forced to play with a QLD Cup side!!

If Redcliffe joined the NRL (while still having a side in the Brisbane comp) then I wouldn't have the hide to claim the Brisbane team's record in the broader comp.

The reality for Port is that they won 32 flags in the SANFL and they still have a side playing in the SANFL. Port Power is a new club that is a separate entity to the Port Magpies, it is not a single entity carrying over from a weaker comp to a stronger one.

And my point stands.

Port fans can't bag us out for building up a squad rather than running with rejects, given the fab deal the club got when entering the comp through the Murder Rule.

Did you know Richmond have culled more experience over the last 2 years than Hawthorn?? I didn't realise that until this morning. Found that interesting given the two distinctly different paths the clubs are taking.

With regards to Port Adelaide. Wouldn't both clubs be run by the same administration though? With Port Adelaide in the SANFL essentially being their Coburg/Box Hill ?

Have they?

Hay, Holland, Beaumont, Thompson, Graham, McCabe, Tallis, Barlow are a pretty experienced clump to go. Although we are holding on to Barker, Lekkas & Dixon, I suppose.

Hawthorn did leak experienced (but not necessarily very good) footballers across previous years, which is part of the reason why they had the biggest clump of 21-24 year old footballers in the comp this season.

I haven't seen the comparison figures, although I'd imagine the turnover would be similar.

No, separate bodies.

As it works in SA, half the SANFL clubs are linked to the Power and the other half are linked to the Crows, meaning that "reserve" players at the two clubs are distributed across the SANFL competition.

Similarly, with father/son rulings, the Power can take youngsters whose fathers played enough games with any of their specific feeder clubs, and likewise for the Crows.
