Sydney people don't give a sh*t about AFL. So what's the difference? How do you KNOW what the ratings would be like. Typical.

I never stated that sydney people like AFL, don't put words in my mouth. In fact when laughing about Nth Melbourne's crowds up there I pretty much said the opposite.

Melbourne Storm - Look at their crowds...

You put them on tellie on a Saturday evening or a Sunday afternoon, competing with the AFL games on FTA AND the AFL games on Foxtel ...

If you honestly beleive people in this city would watch, you Northerners are dumber than you sound.

They won't even show SOO live and have to be dragged kicking and screaming into showing the GF live... Stop kidding yourselves. RL will never take off in Melbourne.

The schools are always a good example of how a sport is travelling ... They made this big deal recently about Bayside High joining the Aussie Home Loans Cup (or whatever it is called these days). This is the Altona Campus we are talking about ... NZ'ers & Pacific Islanders ... The sport won't take off in Melbourne. You all need to just accept that fact.

Nobody watches the AFL up here.

That's the point.

Nobody watches it AFL up here and it gets shown, rugby league won't do any worse down in melbourne. It's got a small target to beat, which is what diehard's point is. If they show AFL up here with those ratings, they should show RL down in melbourne, regardless of ratings.

More people watched the RL gf in melbourne than watched the AFL gf in sydney.

This isn't about RL. It's about AFL going nowhere in Sydney, despite their efforts.

BTW, who are you calling northerner you turncoat. I know where you grew up.

Lets not forget that AFL has been shown live into Sydney for 30 years, and the Swans have been around for 25 years....

The Storm can only dream about FTA coverage in Melbourne at a reasonable time.

A generation of people have grown up with the Swans, but there is still hardly any interest in them.

How does Channel 10 afford to show them live in prime time?? They must be giving away their advertising.

I'm 25 ...

Have lived in Sydney for 7 years of my life
Have lived on the Gold Coast for 1 year of my life
Have lived in Melbourne for 17 years of my life

Hardly a turncoat lol

The thread may be about that... I wasn't commenting on the thread as a whole, just on one particular comment, trying to point out to those that absoloutely loathe Australian Rules Footy that not everyone on the planet agrees with them, especially once you travel south of the Murray.

You have conceded that Rugby League has a tiny 'day to day' audience in Melbourne. Exactly the point I was making. I do strongly beleive that SBS would outrate any FTA Rugby League games in the same way as the AFL is out rated in Sydney. It's not a bag on Rugby League, just a realistic view of what I know of Melbourne people based on my day to day experience of talking sport with people - Neither of the Rugby codes ever come into the equation.

What annoys me about some of the Aussie Rules hating imbeciles on this website (Not yourself) is their apparent view that if it is on tv that will solve all the issues relating to the fact Victorians really don't care about the game. It doesn't now, nor will it ever solve the problem. If the game is to be grown in Victoria it needs to be promoted like crazy. You may hate Aussie Rules, but one thing you cannot fault the AFL on is their dedication to promoting their game outside their heartland territory. Personally, I don't really care if anyone north of the Murray plays or watches the game, so long as I can watch Richmond that's enough for me. However I do admire the AFL commision for the dedication they show to their cause. Rugby League fans and it's administrators could certainly take a leaf out of their book.

I would love to see Rugby League grow down here, you have no idea how hard it is being a fan of a game in totally foreign territory, especially in a city where it's sporting landscape is so uniquely driven to one particular sport. However, the attitude that we are going to embrace the game purely by putting it on tv is pathetically ignorant of who we are and sadly it will never work.

Is that really an unfair view to take?

And what do you think is the best way to promote the game, turncoat?

That is right, television, pick a prize from the top shelf son!

No.

Rugby League has been on tv before ... The old ABC Sat Arvo game and the Sunday TV game used to be shown in Melbourne (At same time as in Sydney) ... Didn't make any difference whatsoever.

For that matter the Storm for one season were also shown at a decent timeslot ... What are their crowd figures again?

Your post just proves the arrogance and idiocy of those northerners who expect Victorians will just accept their game down here.

The AFL Commision may be many bad things but at least they work hard to try and realise their dream of a national game.

Rather than the NRL who do abosloutely nothing to try and work towards that.

The TV coverage of Melbourne Storm games was actually considered to negatively effect Storm crowds, because people could watch it at home on television. But it was seen as a neccessary evil.

Getting rugby league on the box, even if it was one Storm game a week or match of the round, finals, State of Origins and internationals.

Through television you sow the seeds to capture long term interest. The Lions wouldn't be as popular as they are if they weren't on television. If they were on at 11:30pm people would judge them by their time slot not the merits of the sport or team.

Getting a fair national TV contract is the biggest hurdle facing this code.

AFL gets sh*thouse ratings in Brisbane and Sydney and they have something like 4 LIVE games a weekend into northern states. We'd be satisfied with a fraction of that.

And the ratings the Swans and Lions get are mainly on Saturday nights where there is no competing rugby league match televised, so it gives an unrealistic representation of the popularity of AFL in northern sta......in real Australia.

Until we get a fair tv contract, rugby league will always be 2nd rate to the people of Melbourne, their journalists and their businessmen, merely by opening up the TV Guide and seening 2nd rate TV timeslots...

True, great show. Have seen the first nine episodes, as they're shown Saturday nights here in England. Highly recommend the second Doctor Who episode (this week in Oz?), it's a good laugh...

Watched the 10th yesterday. The whole "are you my mummy" bit was a bit freaky.

Sounds like an awesome show! It should get even higher ratings next week off the back of all this publicity! Its profile has risen massively.

Swans have no chance in the future! The Iron Chef will be invincible!

IRON CHEF!! IRON CHEF!! IRON CHEF!!

I agree with Meltiger, if the Storm spend a couple of seasons down the bottom they will play in front of 3-5,000.

lol

Melbourne people have barley been exposed to rugby league. Sydney people have had AFL and the Swans shoved in their faces for over 20 years and they still refuse to watch.

I'm sure a Storm game would rate better than that. Anything half-decent would rate better than that.

Weren't the Swans in the top 6 before last weekend's game? That is a pathetic ratings outcome, but it's been like that for years. Channel 10 are taking a massive hit in Sydney.

When the Storm had their games shown in Melbourne on a saturday arvo a few years ago they got between 80 and 120,000 viewers for their games.

This is very comparable to what the Swans get and is much better than non-Swans games in Sydney. The reason they were canned was because the NRL had no clause in their TV contract keeping them on TV.

The reason the AFL is shown in Sydney is because of the tv arrangements which demand it. If it were up to logic, you wouldn't see an AFL game on a sydney free to air channel.

25 years of good TV coverage and the Swans are still a failure. But we'll keep getting them shoved down our throats.

League rates better on Melbourne TV than you think, much better than the Swans anyway. Just look at the grand final figures involving non-Melbourne clubs. Imagine the figures if the STorm made it again?

I can't stand the attitude of dimwits like this prick who think it's fine for the AFL to get twice as much FTA coverage as league does in Sydney, but when it comes to league people talking about getting their game on in Melbourne, they are are deluded.

AFL rules free to air television in Sydney on a weekend in terms of actual coverage, but that's ok it seems even though nobody watches it.

If Storm games were shown in Melbourne, the ratings figures wouldn't be any different, but at least the game would get more exposure. This must be part of the next TV deal.

About as big as the Swans in the early to mid 90s'. 10-12,000 average.

Swans got coverage then and have done ever since.

But not only do we get Swans matches we get a Saturday afternoon live game, A sunday afternoon live game, two late night replays and of course the Swans Saturday night game. AFL saturation in Sydney when it is totally unjustified.

We are asking for just one Storm game a week to be shown into Melbourne.

AFL has 5 games per week (3 live) shown into Sydney.

But of course we leaguies are deluded if we ask for just that one game per week in Melbourne. Of course, course!

Insular pricks.

Don't really care about Sydney tv or the Swans. When will you AFL hating dipsh*ts realise that not everyone who supports AFL desperately wants the Swans to survive. I really don't care what the Swans do.

Kill them off and that's one less potential road trip Richmond have to make every year.

We are asking for just one Storm game a week to be shown into Melbourne.

When did I say Don't put RL on Prime time FTA TV in Melbourne ??? It would be much better for me, only game I get to watch during the weekend is the FNF game cause I cannot afford Fox.

It just makes me laugh that you dumb bastards are arrogant enough to beleive Victorians will suddenly become supporters if the games are on tv. You are fools, plain and simple.

The game needs to be promoted correctly at grass roots level and at the highest level if it is to grow.

AFL has 5 games per week (3 live) shown into Sydney.

Not my problem, send a petition to Channels 9 & 10

But of course we leaguies are deluded if we ask for just that one game per week in Melbourne. Of course, course!

No. You are deluded if you think without proper promotion the games will rate any higher than Sth Melbourne does in Sydney ... THAT was my argument. I did not once say that the games shouldn't be on tv.

Insular pricks.

No, the insluar wankers are the ones on this site who seem to get some pride out of supporting one game and one game only & attack anyone who dares support more than one game.

Just because I support the AFL and am realistic about the chances of Rugby League growing in my city does not mean I hate Rugby League for christs sake. Far from it you morons.

But of course, I am just another AFL supporter, who hates Rugby League. What would I know about the people I spend every day around hey?

Imbeciles.

Crowds have skyrocketed since they stopped showing them on nine ...

I'm not arguing with the ratings of footy in the Northern States. I just beleive that the NRL (& the arrogant posters on this site) could take a leaf out of the AFL book and promote the hell out of the game.

Instead of just waltzing in with the usual "We're better than you" arrogant attitude that the Northern States show towards us and expect we will take on your game.

It won't happen, and if you just force RL onto people without any kind of 'development partnership', it just won't work.

Honestly, don't take me for someone who wants to see the AFL take over the world. So long as Richmond survive I'm a happy man :) lol Kill the Swans and Lions for all I care.
