Well, well, well.

This beast just continues to raise its very ugly head!

The word around the traps is that the new broadcasting consortium is looking to renew ther push for a night GF. #-o

My view certainly hasn't changed since the last time - THEY NEED TO GET OVER IT!!!

I can't believe that anyone, outside of the TV execs and the small group of unfortunates who have to work on Saturday afternoons, could find the idea of a Sunday night GF enticing??!!

Its bullsh*te, isn't it?!

Anyhow, feel free to tell me how much you love the idea, should you wish...

Totally and utterly agree with you Cyber :x They want to go the way of Rugby League to appease the sponsors ect.....it's madness and I hope they get a bigger backlash from supporters of AFL than RL fans did.....nothing like a BBQ with your mates/family and a few coldies as you watch the GF and not have to worry about going to work the next day (although I go to church which can be a problem with a sore head  ) .....and for families the kids can see the whole game and not have to worry about school the next day!

Yep, you're spot on, Chillers!

That said, I can already see how this one will play out.

The AFL will put it out there, the people will decry it en masse, and the AFL will bow to the networks and run with it anyway! ](*,)

No doubt the AFL will just assume that people will tune in for the GF no matter what time its on, so they'll roll over for a good belly scratch.

Sadly, they'd be right... They effectively have a captive audience on this one.

Exactly what they did for the RL GF ](*,) My 5 year old hasn't seen a full RL grand final yet, he watched the whole Swannies GF win last year with me though with a pie and a softdrink (something he never gets so he thought he was very special  ) my 8 year old plays AFL and after last years GF I think the younger one will want to as well!

Sunday night Grand Final?

WTF?

'Last Saturday in September' is the time honored saying in Melbourne.

I have no problems with a night Grand Final ... A Saturday Night Grand Final.

I can't see it happening. They got away with in the Sydney because of the Labour Day Public Holiday in NSW, even though I still argue long and hard this so called National Competition is denying many people outside of NSW the chance to attend.

There is no holiday in Melbourne in September or October, the backlach in Victoria to a Sunday night GF would be tremendous. People don't even like attending 5pm games ona Sunday down here. A public relations disaster.

As far as I am aware, the fool may be incompetent 99% of the time, but Vlad has always been against this concept.

Early openers suggest you're right on this.

The word currently drifting out of the Melbourne Kremlin is that the AFL is not giving any consideration to moving the GF timeslot.

I hope it stays this way, but power and money all too often is brought to bear on such issues.

I still dont know... im a traditionalist so i dont like much of what is changing with AFL these days (what the blokes back in 1930 would have thought about having umps in orange/green/red i dont know..)

But i think like most people in that its going to happen one day, just like the suburban footy grounds disappearing (because of $$$) so i'ld say a night grand final will eventually be introduced (again because of money)

Maybe we should just give it a go one year and see what people think of it. Or maybe just have a referendum at the next election... :)

With all due respect Cam, we're a few weeks away from a gaurenteed 80k crowd ... Compared to 25k & getting abused at Scumwood Park ... I'll take the G any day of the week.

Yeah, on the odd occasion I miss the old suburban grounds, but then I snap out of it and remind myself how much more comfortable things are in the current day.

Happy to see Vlad poo-pooing the notion of a night GF in the media this morning.

Saturday afternoon remains the time of choice (for all games) for the fans and its good to know that Saturday arvo GFs are likely to continue for a while yet.

Doesn't Friday Night Football generate bigger crowds & ratings?

Yes, although it will still depend on the game being played.

In recent times there's been a tendency to give sides like Collingwood & Essendon a lot of Friday night games. Hardly a surprise that such games should generally draw higher crowds, and there's little doubt that Friday night is a preferable TV viewing time.

In surveys, however, Saturday afternoon remains the consistent primary game visitation time of choice.

Im sure you would.. you have been to all the old footy grounds and have watched footy at most of them, I have not.

I would take the G over any ground.. ofcourse. But i would rather Punt road than Telstra Dome.

Anyway i'll leave this to another thread, although it does have to do with how AFL has changed i guess.

I saw a good example in the Age, about how the AFL said they wanted the prelim finals played on the same day to allow both teams equal time to rest. But just look how long that lasted when they saw the extra amount of money you would get from having a Friday night and Saturday game..

The question is not 'if' but 'when'
