Hmmm...
What can we make of this round?
A few random thoughts:
1) It wasn't that long ago that Brisbane was being hyped to the max and lauded for its capacity to bring through talented youth without falling down the table. Yesterday's match showed the fragility of this thinking, and how vulnerable the Brisbane side is when a few of its big names hit the deck. Brisbane will not make the finals in 2005, it is gone! It may well struggle to make it in 2006 also.
2) Port Adelaide looks troubled, but will probably still make the eight given that it has a decimated Brisbane to play this weekend and Freo at home the following weekend. Geelong looks exceedingly vulnerable, and will be hoping against hope that the inhospitable surrounds of Shell Stadium are enough to break West Coast this weekend. Worrying times indeed at Corio.
3) Melbourne? Brave and vital win against the Cats has kept their finals hopes alive and the team is good enough to win its last two, but the Bulldogs will present a big hurdle to jump.
4) Stunningly, Richmond is still alive despite only winning 2 of its last 11 matches, but must win its remaining two games and hope that other results fall its way. Its looking like a very big ask.
5) A revitalised Carlton won again on the weekend to temporarily free itself from 16th spot, only to see undermanned Hawthorn break its long standing hoodoo against the Bombers and return it to poll spoon placing. Both sides have made a mockery of Craig's assertion that they were rolling over for draft picks and both sides will fancy their chances this weekend. Carlton will almost certainly beat Essendon and while Richmond will start favourites against the Hawks, there is likely to be little between the sides.
6) Collingwood will be hard pressed winning again this season and now look good things for the wooden spoon. Wins by Hawthorn and Carlton this weekend will all but gaurantee the Magpies the wooden utensil, along with picks 1 & 2 in the draft and top pick in the PSD.
7) Fabulous win by Sydney who continue to surge in form and confidence.
