FORMER Port Adelaide AFL star Fabian Francis has been ordered to stand trial for rape.
Today, Francis, 36, pleaded not guilty in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court to four counts of raping a woman between 1998 and 2006.
One of the rapes was allegedly committed while Francis was a key member of Port Adelaide's original AFL squad.
The other three alleged rapes occurred between 2005 and 2006, after his retirement from the AFL.
Lawyers for Francis, of Greenwith, were today due to argue that the charges should be thrown out, but instead conceded their client has a case to answer.
Francis has also pleaded not guilty to 33 various other charges including threatening life, assault, and causing bodily harm.
The tax-office is attempting to bankrupt Francis, claiming he failed to pay income tax (and the Medicare levy) of $32,022 in 2003/04.
Francis played 109 matches for Port Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane between 1991 and 2001 before a knee injury ended his AFL career in 2002.
He was also runner-up in the 1996 Magarey Medal.
Magistrate Kevin Edgecomb remanded Francis on continuing bail to appear in the District Court in September next year.
