6 African teams?

I wonder what happens if each team grows to "full member" size... What happens then?

Will RLEF let them go to form their own federation or will they keep them and try to expand further and form their own "RLIF"?
There already is a federation of sorts, the MEA branch of the RLEF, it will presumably continue to be a part of the RLEF with greater devolution of responsibility over time. Same goes for the North American countries. The RLIF is a waste of time and TBH should be forgotten about in terms of actual development.

^ With due respect I'm not sure what relevance a bunch of Aussies playing in Australia has to African RL development.

Hey EH,

Contacted the NSWRL to check on the African RL link and received this reply.

"Africa United team has developed over the last few years and entering in competitions both in the under 16's, and 18s and also interstate tournaments representing African heritage.

More recently the African United team were rewarded for their positive contribution to African communities, at the Celebrate African Australians awards and Steve Warwick who coordinates Africa united teams was also awarded for his services to African communities through rugby league."

Agree that it doesn't directly relate 'on the continent' advances - but i think the program - and more importantly its participants - deserve the recognition and support of International RL advocates.

(Recall that there has been Fiji UK; Jamaica UK; British Asia in some form over the years. Not that different)

Great news from Ethiopia and like this quote about beginning in schools and universities. This excites me more than other nations who have maybe a 4-5 team senior comp and no junior exposure at all.

We are introducing rugby league football in Ethiopia – through the Tigray Region - at youth level, so as to create a firm foundation for future growth,” said Abubeker. “We are beginning in schools and universities in the north of Ethiopia, and we will spread our sport to the rest of the country.”

Yeah, good on them, I'm not saying they can't do it, just that this Aus-based faux-development is the kind of stuff that has been pushed for years in RL and got the sport nowhere. I've actually helped out with the British Asian team in the past, it's a good initiative but it isn't international development.

Some news on the advances in Ethiopia

Be interesting to see what the future holds for these new African frontiers. I congratulate all involved for having a go and wish them all the best.

That's good news and really to be fair Rugby League would have to be a much more attractive sport to these sorts of nations as well as where RU hasn't got a firm stronghold and haven't been indoctrinated into their blinkered discriminatory views of League.

Looks like a MENA championship game in Morocco is being impacted by local government agendas
