Against Me! leader comes out as transgender

Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has revealed to Rolling Stone that he plans to begin living as a woman under the name Laura Jane Grace.
The full story of Gabel’s transformation will be ecplained in the new issue of Rolling Stone but a teaser for the interview reveals that Gabel has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years and will soon begin taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” Gabel admits, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Gabel has sung about his struggle in the song The Ocean which features the lyrics “If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman, My mother once told me she would have named me Laura, I would grow up to be strong and beautiful like her, One day I’d find an honest man to make my husband”.

I always thought what the lyrics in 'The Ocean' were about

"If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman.
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura"

guess we now know

I know that now people get to make a decision for themselves about this and whatever and that my opinion will offend people. But seriously, why the f**k did society decide to cater for this? Aren't we supposed to be happy with who we are? I mean what if a person said I think I'd happier living as a dog. Would we cater to that transformation? I know it's not exactly the same thing but your gender is such a huge part of who you are.

And for those who think I am closed minded, would you date someone who had a sex change?

I think being a dog would be sweet. Running around a yard, mindlessly barking at shadows, free board and food, a good scratch now and then. Yeah I could do that.

This guy is happy with who he is, he's female according to his mind, he just wants to project and embrace that I guess with the change.

With being in the public eye and being a well known front man it's a ballsy move for him, will be interesting to see how alot of against me fans take it

If you can ignore the fact that she has the face of a man

In all seriousness though, good on the bloke for having the balls to come out like that if it's what he really wants. Not sure how it will affect their band though.

I know it's recognised as a disorder, but we're supposed to teach people to be happy with themselves. I mean we try and promote this idea that guys and girls don't have to conform to gender stereotypes. So why then is there such thing as being a woman trapped inside a man's body? I don't know, I guess I just don't understand it.

It would be interesting to see how it impacts on his daughter. His wife is supporting him through it. I couldn't even imagine what that would be like for her.

Did you know that people can genetically be the opposite sex as what their bodies display? Take a look at that South African Olympic runner who was genetically neither clearly a female or a male. It's a grey area at times - and that's leaving out all the purely psychological stuff - and if society can cater for these people then why shouldn't it?

(The idea of "happiness" as a goal in life or a state of being is a new and quite alien concept to most of the population of the world.)

Yeah, but that's genetically, it's not psychologically, I don't understand why there isn't more of a focus on making them content with themselves rather than chopping their dicks off.

Tom's an adult though and has probably put a lot of thought into it. But when they allow for kids to make these decisions it just shocks me.

I don't know, perhaps I need to learn more about it to understand it.

Part of me is the biggest f**king homophobe (I think) about this (as an issue) and the other part is just ok with it.

Overall though, I just don't care enough to even educate myself on Gut's made up shit.

I made up this thing that you've got redeeming human qualities but it was too far fetched.

I don't care.

Big deal ?

Plenty of other arty fatty types have been pretty screwed up.

I read the guitarist from powder finger gets around dressed like a wizard.

She's doesn't have the face of a man at all, plastic surgeons aren't that shit.

If you didn't know you'd hit it.
