EAGLES fans were forced to sip on soft drinks as the pain of successive defeats sunk into the premiers at Manly-Warringah League Club on Sunday night.
In what may be a first for rugby league fans, supporters were not allowed to drink alcohol at Manly’s first official club function since the infamous season launch on March 6.
Fans gathered to meet the players following the Sea Eagles’ disappointing 26-24 loss to the New Zealand Warriors at Brookvale Oval on Sunday evening.
Some fans questioned league club management about the non-alcohol edict, but there were no incidents.
It follows a directive from the Sea Eagles to ban the players from drinking alcohol at all club, sponsor or NRL events, following the launch at the Manly Wharf Hotel earlier this month.
Manly CEO Grant Mayer said the function upstairs was a family event and fans could still purchase and drink alcohol in the main bar downstairs.
``We don’t believe in a family environment, it (drinking alcohol) was the right look,’’ he said. ``There was no alcohol served at one bar for an hour-and-a-half. Patrons were still allowed to buy drinks and consume them downstairs.’’
Mr Mayer said the booze ban will be effective for players all season but will be reviewed for fans after six rounds of the NRL premiership.
Security was employed to ensure supporters did not sneak alcohol into the Sea Eagles’ function upstairs.
Manly-Warringah League Club general manager Peter Spray said it was a Sea Eagles directive to ban alcohol from the function.
``Having no alcohol, we lost a bit of an opportunity to raise some revenue, but in the scheme of things, it probably wasn’t a bad idea,’’ he said. ``We had some complaints from people about it.
``If someone holds a function there and says it’s got to be soft drink only, that’s their requirement,’’ he said.
