Look I'm all for signing a marquee fullback to replace Dugan however, Millward has Field at fullback for 2018 and he has not been tested. My point is Field, Dufty and Mann should be tested so that if all of these three players are not suitable, then Millward can buy a fullback like for like or better.

Same goes for our young prop forwards Kerr and Lawrie.

Millwards attitude just might be that he (Millward) is very experienced across football ..and Millward is 100% backing his own belief that Field will be a great first grade fullback / player.....in 2018.

When players like a young Rocket Rod Reddy ran around in reserves, or a young Billy Slater was in reserves..good judges knew for very certain they would make it.

I am sort of ok that Millward backs himself .....without having to trial the players he believes will make it.

I guess with Dugan injured then Field could have been thrown in, but the coach decides who plays ....and Mary went for Nighty at FB.

The reasoning would be lets keep an experienced test player at the back for now, ....and we can use Field orogressively more until he is playing long minutes.

Coming off 3 losses and still no widdop, a safety first attitude of lets put nighty down the back versus Field is understandable i think.

Field will be blooded little by little until he is playing full games.

I dont think there is a rush.

Its not like we dont have nighty....a proven test player.

However, Johnston will be a great fullback, many people and keen football followers agree.
He isnt just a winger. He will become a great fullback.
His asking price is not 750k like dugans was.

The club does not see Mann as our fullback. They see him as a wnger, centre, and halves cover.

Thats ok.

If Aitken doesnt perform Mann will play centre.

If Lafai is injured, Mann will be centre.

Hunt or widdop will probably be injured at some point....so if Mann is told we will pay you 400k or whatever it is... to be our utility....whats wrong with that?

As long as Mann is paid decent money he may very well be happy to be our super utility.

We are lucky to have him.

If money is right..Mann will stay.

He plays as our winger, he isnt our FB. He only moves to FB to cover injuries ...because he is regarded as the second best FB in the club. Which he is.

He is a test player....a gun. Older yes... but still an experienced old gun.

Mann is nor considered a FB.

Mann is too busy to play FB.... he will be filling in for Widdop, Hunt, Lafai, Aitken and any wing injuries.

He will be a busy boy!

Thats a selection choice, we all have our own ideas. . but i CAN see the clubs point of view with Nighty at FB.

Finally... Dufty and Field are considered potentially good first grade fullbacks...clboth of them.

The club thinks Field will make it to FB faster and better....whats wrong with that?

The reason Field plays a different position for his team now is because it suits the makeup of that teams strengths and weaknesses.

In 2018 expect to see Field at FB. Night wing. Nighty FB backup for injuries. Mann covering centre, wng and halves injuries.

Perfect planning i think.

If a good signing comes to play FB / Wing.... then its up to all concerned to win the position in front of that new external player.

Great depth = great results.

It will sort itself out by players making a position their own BY PERFORMNG week after week.

The players will drive the final outcome.

He isnt coaching for the future.... he is coaching what's in front of him.

Ummm....He has plans for Mann as our super utility.

No....Mary wont play Mann at FB.

Mary will select the second best FB at the club to play FB... if dugan is injured this year.

Next year Mary will see who steps up from Field, Dufty.. or the new signing coming.

Its up to the players to show they own it.

I'm not entirely sure on Johnston to date! Yes he has speed in abundance but his defence is rather suspect to say the least. Agreed his price is a bonus.....but he'll need plenty of hard work in the defence department. 50/50 at this stage for me.

Alex Johnston thinks he is a fullback in the games I have seen him play there for Souffs I have seen no indication that this is the case. Would rather park nighty there for a year and go after Cody Walker who is one of the most natural footballers in the game today.

Field has potential for sure - quick and can pass the ball. As long as he has big wingers to pass the ball off to like Slater does he would be fine.

If johnston comes then whoever plays well enough to own the position will get it.

Form will dictate it.

Either way we will have a good FB as one or both will step up.

That has me confused as well . The problem is the left hand ( Millward ) doesn't know what the right hand ( Mary ) is doing or care .They both have there own agenda . Millward is the one who keeps saying who should be playing where ..Mary keeps saying he will pick the team and play who he thinks is best in whatever positions . And the two don't meet or have the same ideas .

Your whole post is spot on. I agree with you about Johnston at fullback. At first I thought he could develop into a good fullback, the position he played most of his juniors at, but I have watched him closely at fullback over the last few years and he is a major let down. There is no way I would want Johnston as our fullback.

I would rather we see how Field or Dufty go at fullback for us. I agree with you about Cody Walker too.

10 pages dedicated to Alex Johnston. FMD we are talking about a speedy winger who can find the tryline but doesn't have a lot of defensive highlights. The club would be crazy to sign him as FB. Nathan Merritt MK2

Your whole post is spot on. I agree with you about Johnston at fullback. At first I thought he could develop into a good fullback, the position he played most of his juniors at, but I have watched him closely at fullback over the last few years and he is a major let down. There is no way I would want Johnston as our fullback.

I would rather we see how Field or Dufty go at fullback for us. I agree with you about Cody Walker too.

Players are very unhappy at souths....same as Vaughan at rickys raiders...he was in reggies can you believe it!?

Johnston is a good player.
