This covers clubs for remaining player contract salaries where a new injury forces early retirement. Quite different, but still I don't see how the risk of a player suffering total and permanent disability as a result of a single event would be so great that insurance wouldn't touch it.

Be interesting to know what the annual premiums are and what is actually covered and what is excluded

What is covered by junior player insurance premiums ?

Dont know the exact details but id assume there is some third party accident/damages cover. The older players have really basic income protection but it if i remember correctly there is a fairly long waiting period to be off work before the payments kick in and im pretty sure the level of cover is really low. Probably based on minimum wage?

Like any insurance, the higher the cover the more the premiums. Taylor Swift has her legs covered for $40mill, Beckham had his legs insured for 100million pounds!
I'm sure players can get decent insurance coverage if they are willing to pay the premium required. I would have thought some joint responsibility with NRL covering a standard workers comp type premium and players having their own disability insurance if they chose to take it out would be the logical way to go.

Why should a player need to insure themselves against an injury at the workplace? that really should be a cost covered by their employer. Really the $500000 level of coverage at the time of Alex's injury was no where near adequate, we have players earning more than double that in a season. The NRL are set to start paying clubs up to $13 million a season each. $15-$20 million for a bloke who will never walk again from playing the game is not much when the amount $ the NRL is going through is considered.

Because workers comp rarely covers lost full potential earnings at this level and full medical care in a catostrophic event like Alex's. Hence why Beckham insured his legs for 100million despite the workers cover man utd would have had.

That's not why Beckham insures his legs, he insures his legs for the potential of injury outside the sport. He insures them incase of an accident that stops him for playing. Same as your example of Taylor swift insuring her legs, do you really believe she has her legs insured incase she injures them during a concert?

The game can, or should be able to afford to make Alex's life very comfortable, that's the least he deserves. He broke his neck providing entertainment to a couple of hundred thousand fans. Lets look after someone that this sport broke.

So where does NRL or co-ordinating organisation responsibility start and stop ?

I suspect there should a minimum cover that varies from from U5s to NRL

And players cannot be registered and playunless they have paid their rego/insurance fees for their associated competition
