Now then is it me or have FIRA (European RU) made a concerted effort to get Greece playing rah rah to counter the threat of League becoming the first International rugby code in the country?

Picture above is the first ever game of rugby by Greece v Austria played 22nd October in Vienna.

Seems strange how the country has never been a union target before.

It will be interesting to see which code plays the first game in Greece.
If its a joint effort between the Union and the Greek RL in Sydney,it will be an amazing step for FIRA to acknowledge our code.
Anyone any info on whats going on over there??

YANTO it’s true that Greece start to play rugby union, I was in 2002 on first 7 tournament in Greece when Greece start to play rugby union. They have 3 or 4 clubs in Thessalonica and Athena clubs are made from Greece people who lived in Australia, SA, NZ, UK… and UK, Australian, NZ people who work there.

And FIRA-AER was very keen to get Greece to play union, and as I said to you
that on 06.11.2005 when Serbian Rugby Union national side play against Malta, president of FASISTIC organization FIRA-AER(European Rugby Union Federation) Mr. Jean Cloud Baque will come to investigate if there is rugby league players in Serbian Rugby Union national team, is there players who play both sport, is there coach who work in both sport… He chose Serbian against Malta game because Serbia and Malta are countries where you have rugby league and where in rugby union national teams you have people who play league…

To the union defenders show us where rugby league officials have done whatever they can to undermine rugby union. Rugby League officials are too busy undermining their own game but at least the product stands strong. Rugby Union officials have tried their damndest to thwart rugby league. Historical evidence is overwhelming in France, England, South Africa, Italy, Yugoslavia and now Serbia, Holland, Wales, New Zealand. I'm sure there are others. Stop being pathetic apologists for your code.

The main differnce with the Greek Rugby Union in Greece, is the player standard and sponsorship is very low.

We are taking a different approach, to become successfull in any sport, you need sponsors and a strong player base. We have both of these in Australia. We will be taking 50 players to Greece in 2006, to start our first competition fully sponsored.

Also many elite Rugby players have made contact with me saying the Greek Rugby Union is very backward, and the player standard very low. Your Pop could play. They want to play with us.

However, I have no problem helping in any way I can the Greek Rugby Union to become successfull in Greece.

Both codes need each other if we are to make it.

No dount there are som top blokes in the Greek RU but having experienced dealing with RU in Germany watch what they do behind your back!My experience they say one thing do another and before you know it you have gone backwards!Adding pointless games etc so they extend there season or increasing the number of teams in the League to make the Off Season shorter or just 2 tricks they use

Yanto, from everything I've read in far off Australia, it sounds like the odd individual in european rugby union is willing to try rugby league or cooperate but the status quo sees us as the enemy and pulls out all stops to destroy us. From what I've read of the efforts of yourself, Der Kaiser and a few others they are in for a fight. Are they worried? Sounds like it and the Rugby League is so grass roots. Imagine if the RLEF/RLIF were significantly cashed up and willing to support you guys, the union toads would be apoplectic.

Anyway, keep up the good work, the Dutch may not be in the world cup any time soon but with you on board it's bound to happen.

Greek Rugby League.

you should contact some of the people on here who are trying to establish/run RL in some of the smaller countries... you may then realise the RU powers that be will shaft you as soon as it becomes practicable.... as soon as you are no longer useful.

I have not once said it was going to be easy to introduce Rugby League to Greece. However the Union federation can waste lots of money trying to destroy our game. There are many new nations that have started around the world in the last few years coming from a rugby backgrounds.

The product of Rugby League is very good. We are getting lots of rugby union people wanting to try our League.

The IRU is not spending the money where it should. This is good for us.

In Australia the Rugby Union grand Final in Sydney in 1st Division only got 10,000 people. The Wallabies had to import 6 New Zealand players to its test squad. There are major problems for union in the years to come.

The Super 12'S only helped Australian Rugby, as it was nearly dead. Also Super League war played a role.

Soccer and AFL are making big inroads into Rugby League and Rugby Union areas, however Rugby league has had its biggest year and growing.

All sports have there problems, you can only control what you have in front of you. Being negative to Union is not the answer. If they want to back door us then it is there loss.

Lets wait and see.

Why don't you do your homework before you try and make everyone feel better here mate ?
Where are the six players the Wallabies import it and who are they ? yeah rugby is in trouble in years to come .
Thats why Perth were included in the S12 and ARU looking at a national comp and the Wallabies still playing test matches and making alot of money .

Who gives a toss about club rugby union in OZ just as who gives a toss about club rugby league in OZ .

Seem both codes are more interest it in the NRL and Super 12 that they are forgeting the grassroots .
The same for the AFL, Soccer .
