They are referring to the new finals system.

In AFL, no-one outside the top 4 has won it.

I made the same assumption , but what they mean is no afl side has made the gf from positions 5-8 under the new final system

Then explain to me how this system is different to the system in 1995??

IIRC, the matches were 5 V 8, 6 V 7, 2 V 3 and 1 V 4.

i'm pretty damn sure we have always played 1v8, 2v7 etc .... they did make a change at one point regarding who played who in week 2 to allow for more potential GF combos, but it was always 1v8 etc in week 1

This, and the so called "experts" are predicting we'll follow suit. I don't see why we will though, our comp is far more competitive than AFL.

If they actually said that, then they also forgot where the Warriors came from last year.

All this talk about how makes it a bit easier for top 4 sides the play each other in the Grand Final, however I wouldn't be too surprised to see the Cowboys go through, a team outside the top 4 thats likely to make the decider. Others like Canberra, Cronulla and Brisbane I cant see happening.

Just getting back to the top 8 system used in 1995 and 1996, on the two occassions teams outside the top 4 made the decider and played the minor premiers.

I actually think teams 5 and 6 have a bigger advantage in this system, they get a home game and a chance to build momentum, not to mention the games between the top four (especially Dogs/Manly) are likely to be tougher games, leaving the loser tired and prime for the taking in the second round of finals.

I'm willing to bet that the losers of those top four games will be out in straight sets.

My memory is crap, but I do recall before we had the McIntyre system, we had the current AFL system BUT I think it may have been slightly different. I dont recall how or why but I remember reading an article that said under the system we had, team 2 could never play team 3 in the GF?

But then again I may have dreamt that......
