Im wondering if this was the 'big news' that was expected?
I'm guessing the link with the Hopoates and Utah is due to their Mormon faith/Polynesian heritage, or if John H knows one of the organisers?
While it's cool and all for a 'famous' RL name to be affiliated, the name Hopoate would mean nothing to the population of Utah.

Maybe not the Hopoate Cup, but the addition of two more clubs in Utah is pretty huge:

There is also meant to be a Youth program running in Utah as well.

General question for those that have thier finger on the pulse....
Could it ever happen that league could be played in universities? What would need to happen to make this possible?

The best way to grow a sport is get it played and seen by the next generation...schools and universities

I think it certainly could...but from my knowledge Rugby Union already is doing this. Not that RL cant do it, but I know there is a bit of the perception of the 'rugby' social team at universities. For a lot of Americans, its probably traditionally been their only knowledge/introduction of rugby. Definitely as an amateur social scene, not as a pro-athlete option.

But yeah, so much potential in colleges. Non-pro club sports aren't really a thing in the States. We all know the culture and prestige that comes from playing HS and College sports...you don't play for your local team in your town, you play for your school.

Any idea how long Rugby Union has been played in Colleges ?
I Think Union will have huge growth over the next decade, holding the 2031 world cup and with the newly established professional Rugby comp they'll be able to grow pathways, grass roots and overall awareness.

I fear yet again league could be left in Rugby's dust...it'll take more than a game in Vegas to grow league.

Updated draw for Utah

Each team will play each other twice before finals
I love the 'big-picture' continuation we are starting to see with USARL.
3 different comps played simultaneously with their own finals system.

Then the winners of PCRL and Utah play.
Then the winner of that plays east coast winners.
It gives us a good 'like-for-like' comparison of the leagues.
It also means more games for players and the opportunity to 'step-up' to the next level.
Ideally we will then see a West v East type setup up for the best players also...not sure if its been announced.

Just please dont call it "origin" because thats what its called in Aus! Create a name with prestige and their own local flavour. Like War of the Roses in England...best name ever for a game like that!

It's a shame it has taken so long for the best teams outside of the eastern conferences to have a path to the USA national championship.

Even when the California RL was affiliated with the USARL, the National Final was between the best of the Southern Conference and a play-off between Delaware and Philadelphia.

Hopefully the new USARL board us open to more conferences joining. Ideally next year, we could have Oregon join the PCRL in some way, RLU represent the North East and the Midwest comes back online in some capacity.

agreed. by the looks of social media, Oregon should be very soon. I do hope we see a revival in the NE, which has traditionally been a bit of a stronghold.

Pacific Coast Rugby League (PCRL) are delighted to announce that our affiliate Oregon Rugby League will play their inaugural men’s game against the Vancouver Dragons on Saturday, September 3rd at 1pm at Clagget Creek Park in Keizer, north of Salem, Oregon. The game is being billed as “The Battle in the Capital.”

The ORL team will be made up of players from all over the state and the Pacific Northwest. The Dragons are a Canadian rugby league team that plays in the Rugby League British Columbia (RLBC) competition, where they recently made it to the Grand Final of the competition.

The ORL is looking forward to its inaugural game and is confident that it will be a great match against a strong Dragons team. ORL head Nicolas Sarabia said, “Oregon Rugby League has an opportunity to not only plant a flag for the code of League here in the PNW but to also become another tool in helping Oregon become a state where some of the best rugby players in America can come from. This match is the first step in making such a thing become reality.

In Oregon we value each other and work to better our communities, Oregon Rugby League looks to help better the sport of rugby and add on to the community already here in bettering more members while working alongside our fellow brethrens. The Battle in the Capital is our chance as Oregonians to not only show pride and rally but to let the rest of the world know that rugby league is growing and Oregon is ready for the challenge.”

Vancouver Dragons President Josh Knight was equally optimistic: “The Vancouver Dragons are coming off a very successful Rugby League British Columbia season and are looking forward to our first road trip as a club, to visit our southern neighbors. Most importantly, we are very excited to help Oregon Rugby League grow the greatest game of all in the 33rd state; eventually building the growth of the sport for the Pacific Northwest and Pacific Coast Rugby League.”

In our first season, this exciting matchup will mark the third different state to host a game under the PCRL umbrella, after California and Utah.
