An option to make international league stronger

I not sure if it could work but to make the game stronger on the international scene an option would be invite, say half a dozen players and coaches from png, france, usa, russia, japan, italy etc to join up with some of our nrl clubs for half a season or a full season to learn from our top line players and coaches. Even if they play in lower grades and are still given the chance to make first grade, it must be stronger competions than they are playing in there own countries. the one main problem i suppose would funding for them to live over here for a few months who should pay, but this should surley give them a better awareness of how we have become the dominant nation in world rugby league and the only way to learn and get better is to watch and learn from the best.

The problem isa that this game is not an international game no matter how hard you try to make it, or believe it.
I love it and follow it,but when it comes down to it it's just too complicated (the Rules ) to follow for it to be an international game, you can blame this on Australia.lets face it ,we are the only mab that can play it profesionally consistantly.thats because we keep changing the rules, the Kiwiws do alright because they are just over the pond and lets face it without the accent we would be the same Country. The Poms try hard and occasiona;;y suceed but the rest of the world don't have a clue and don't really care too ,it is a localised sport and that is how it will stay as long as it continues to be stubborn and not change it''s rules.(ie) We use the Video Ref for some reasons but not for the blatantly obviouse.
The Union Refs have a go and make decisions for them selves without having to constantly revert to the Video Ref,there touch judges actually get involved with the game and they play is actually free flowing.
Ok now I will hear all the whingers saying that there are too many penalties and the game is stop start.
Well lets look at the penalties there are just as many in league.it's just that the union boys can kick a lot firther that the League boys so that is why there are more penalty kicks.
Stop Start???? Is not the play stopped in Rugby league when a player is tackled????? whereas in Union the play continues because there are no tackles as such but ball release and therefor play flows on.
I am not trying to defame rugby league as I am a Fan and a passionate one at that.I just ask that the league fans open there minds and see that Union is just a good a game and when it comes to Internationally it is better.
Cheers

Sounds great in theory, but as some people already mentioned funding is the problem. I'd also add to the funding issue. We aren't just talking about feeding and housing the foreign players for a few months while they are here, but don't forget that players in the developing nations are amateurs, and to have them come out here for 3-6 months would mean abandoning whatever it is they do for a living in their home country. Basically they couldn't do it.

Sorry i counted only 3 penalties in the NRL grand Final.
Onion players kick more goals because there points system is screwed.
To hard to understand what about onion.
Stop start??? A Onion Ruck is a glorified play the ball.
onion continuos well not any of the matches i have seen there is no fluency.

Once again a rubbish post deserves to be sent to the RL v O v AFL thread.

Having ventured out to Suncorp Stadium last night for the Scotland v USA RWC match, I came away smiling knowing the league has a much better spectator spectacle.

It is an easier game to follow and with LESS stoppages than a yawnion game. I must admit it was my first international rugby and there was atmosphere but that quickly dissapated when everyone kept going for penalty kicks. Even the crowd started booing.

I could not beleive how much the ref kept stopping the game. Whilst I will profess to not knowing the rules very well (even though I played it at uni), I couldn't get into the game when I couldn't see where the ball was for half of it.

BTW - the rugby ball is different to a league ball and is more conducive to kicking longer distances.

So what are you saying, we should give up expanding the game right now ?

thats because we keep changing the rules,

No, the rules are being changed for the better. We just happen to be the innovators at changing them because we are numero uno at the game.

We'd didn't get rid of the lineout in 1897, we didn't bring in the play the ball in 1906.

the Kiwiws do alright because they are just over the pond and lets face it without the accent we would be the same Country.

How long did Cricket wait to bring in the video unpire, and notice how long it took for the video umpire to decide decide on catches, when it was initially brought in to only judge on run outs.

The Union Refs have a go and make decisions for them selves without having to constantly revert to the Video Ref,there touch judges actually get involved with the game and they play is actually free flowing.

And this issue is a huge contention. Games being decided by incorrect decisions, and penalties awarded for subjective decisions, i.e joining the ruck from behind the last feet.

The game doesn't flow when Sir Johnny of Wilkinson takes 5 minutes to line up a penalty kick after every 3rd penalty.

Ok now I will hear all the whingers saying that there are too many penalties and the game is stop start.

It also has a lot do do with the ball. I am a crap kicker with a league ball, I can kick from about 35 out, 10 in from touch with a Union ball, this has alot do with aerodynamics.

Stop Start???? Is not the play stopped in Rugby league when a player is tackled????? whereas in Union the play continues because there are no tackles as such but ball release and therefor play flows on.

You obviously do not know the difference between a dominant tackle and one that isn't. This is quite a complex ruling, and even some hardcore league fans don't quite understand it fully. A the point of the tackle, the game moves from a team-based contest of ball movement, to an individual contest of strength and body positioning. This is one area I suspect league may move towards a quasi-ruck/maul, to ensure every PTB is fast. To say the gameplay stops at the tackle means you have no f*cking idea how important a fast PTB is.

I am not trying to defame rugby league as I am a Fan and a passionate one at that.I just ask that the league fans open there minds and see that Union is just a good a game and when it comes to Internationally it is better.

Leagues bigest problem is not this at all. And not even to get into a 'we suffered injustice in the past' argument.

League by its very nature from creation, i.e a professional attitude, is that the game by structure has become a very elite pasttime.

Soccer, anyone can play, it doesn't matter how unfit I am, I can find equally unfit people and compete on equal terms.

In union, I can keep dropping down grades, to find people of equal stature in regards to skills and fitness.

However in league, there is a cut-off point. One day, my body will not cope with RL.

That's why sports such as soccer and basketball have such high participation numbers, because you can have athletes and your simple joes. RL only has athletes, there is no room for your simple joe.

As the game has progressed this cut off point higher and higher, it makes it even harder for it to introduce to the uninitiated, i.e new countries.

Kurt Angle your last point about League's biggest problem is interesting.

Do you or anybody for that matter have any solutions to that problem?

Only thing I can think of is for clubs to run a modified version of the game.

You actually find in many union clubs, that many of the 4th/5th/6th gade players are 35-45 y/o ex-league players.

Now this I find to be a good thing for the social side of the club, because that many mature guys makes it a more more reasoning influence.

RL clubs have a huge ratio of younger blokes, i.e can be d*ckheads when they get on the turps.

I think the biggest strains on the body come from the distances run, the duration of a half and the impact of the collision of the tackle.

Distances run, well reduce the length of the pitch.
Shorter halves, maybe even quarters.
The big impacts come from props, I can see maybe eliminating props.

I've had this thought before, so my modified game would be along these lines.

The pitch could be play on a standard RL pitch, except 60 metres long, therefore run between each teams 20 metre line, the red line would already indicate the try line.

It would be 50 metres wide, run between the 10 metres in from touch.

The ingoals would be between the 20 & 10. You can convert for the regular stik on the 0 metre lone from where you ground the ball. It would remove field goals from the game however.

60x50 vs 100x70, good concession.

10-12 min quarters.

10 players per side, get rid of the front row, 2 2nd rowers and a lock, we don't need a scrum in the full game, hehe, let alone this one.

5 metre defensive line instead of 10. Guys don't get as much a run up therefore collisions aren't as hard.

Unlimted interchange.

The issue of development is one that unfortunately will not happen the way we would like for as long as the Aussie clubs run the RLIF.
Every suggestion that would enhance the game worldwide is going to cost money. Now you and I, and most people on the forum can see that as a worthwhile investment that will pay back the game in the long run - but for some reason ther ARL does not see this.

If the ARL had their way it would be a 26 game NRL season with no Internationals and no time off for state of origin.

My own development idea was to designate developing countries or regions to NRL and ESL clubs with a minimum spend. This way these nations would come under the development area of that club, and they would have rights on players from those areas and also receive salary cap dispensation for players from those devloping areas. but, I cant see this happening....
